Preface

This preface, as well as all footnotes and annexes, is included for information purposes and is not part of
ANSI/ISA-12.27.01-2011, unless specifically marked as "Normative."

This document has been prepared as part of the service of ISA toward a goal of uniformity in the field of
instrumentation. To be of real value, this document should not be static but should be subject to periodic
review. Toward this end, the Society welcomes all comments and criticisms and asks that they be
addressed to the Secretary, Standards and Practices Board; ISA; 67 Alexander Drive; P. O. Box 12277;
Research Triangle Park, NC 27709; Telephone (919) 549-8411; Fax (919) 549-8288; E-mail:
[email protected].

The ISA Standards and Practices Department is aware of the growing need for attention to the metric
system of units in general, and the International System of Units (SI) in particular, in the preparation of
instrumentation standards. The Department is further aware of the benefits to USA users of ISA
standards of incorporating suitable references to the SI (and the metric system) in their business and
--`,,```,,,,````-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

professional dealings with other countries. Toward this end, this Department will endeavor to introduce
SI-acceptable metric units in all new and revised standards, recommended practices, and technical
reports to the greatest extent possible. Standard for Use of the International System of Units (SI): The
Modern Metric System, published by the American Society for Testing & Materials as IEEE/ASTM SI 10-
97, and future revisions, will be the reference guide for definitions, symbols, abbreviations, and
conversion factors.

It is the policy of ISA to encourage and welcome the participation of all concerned individuals and
interests in the development of ISA standards, recommended practices, and technical reports.
Participation in the ISA standards-making process by an individual in no way constitutes endorsement by
the employer of that individual, of ISA, or of any of the standards, recommended practices, and technical
reports that ISA develops.

1 Scope
This document provides specific requirements for process sealing between electrical systems and
flammable or combustible process fluids where a failure could allow the migration of process fluids
directly into the electrical system.

This document contains requirements for construction and testing of single seal equipment, dual seal
equipment, and add-on secondary seals.

The requirements of this document apply to process seals as described in the process sealing sections of
ANSI/NFPA 70 in the United States or CSA C22.1 in Canada and not to electrical conduit and cable
seals. Requirements for basic electrical safety and explosion protection are not addressed by this
document, but may apply to equipment under investigation. The secondary effects of leakage to the
environment are not addressed by this document.

5 Type verifications and tests

5.1 Test sample

Prior to conditioning and test, the sample shall be visually inspected to ensure that it is in compliance with
design documents. A single representative test sample shall be subjected to the tests of either 5.2 or 5.3
depending on whether the sample is a single or dual seal equipment. In each test requiring the
application of pressure to the seal or parts of the seal, a suitable fluid shall be used. Unless otherwise
stated, all tests required by this document shall be conducted at a temperature of (20 ± 5) °C and a
nominal atmospheric pressure of 1 atmosphere.

A flowchart of the conditioning and test process can be found in Annex A.

5.2 Single seal equipment

5.2.1 Order of conditioning

The test sample shall be subjected to the required conditioning tests in the following order:

a) Temperature cycling

b) Fatigue cycling

After the prescribed conditioning is completed, the test sample shall be subjected to the leakage and
burst pressure tests of 5.2.4 and 5.2.5.

5.2.2 Temperature cycling

For equipment incorporating seals with non-metallic parts excluding glass and ceramic, a representative
sample of the seal shall be subjected to temperature cycling conditioning as follows:

Duration: Two (2) weeks or 150 cycles (whichever occurs first)

Maximum Temperature (Tmax): Manufacturer’s maximum rated process seal

temperature increased by 10 to 15 K

Minimum Temperature (Tmin): Manufacturer’s minimum rated process seal

temperature reduced by 10 to 15 K

Stabilization: The final temperature is considered to have been

reached when the rate of change of temperature
does not exceed 2 K/h
--`,,```,,,,````-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

If the seal is incorporated into equipment that assures the temperature of the seal is maintained such that
the maximum fluctuation is limited to 10 K, the temperature cycling test may be waived.

cycles followed by not less than 5 seconds at

maximum pressure / not less than 5 seconds at
minimum pressure for 90,000 cycles.

For equipment not rated for vacuum applications, the

dwell time at the minimum pressure may be reduced
to 1 second.

Positive and negative pressure cycling may be done in separate cycles. Seals need not be subjected to
vacuum pressure conditioning if the vacuum pressure range is less than 5% of the full working pressure
range of the equipment.

If the seal is incorporated into equipment that assures the pressure applied to the seal is maintained such
that the maximum fluctuation is limited to 345 mbar (5 p.s.i.), the fatigue cycling test may be waived.
5.2.4 Leakage test

The seal shall withstand for 1 minute without visible leakage the following overpressure test: (a) 2.0 times
the maximum working pressure for working pressures equal to or less than 14 MPa; (b) 1.75 times the
maximum working pressure plus 3,500 kPa for working pressures over 14 MPa and up to 70 MPa; or (c)

70 MPa < pmax 2 x pmax + 42 MPa

NOTE These requirements are the same as those found in ANSI/ISA-61010-1 (82.02.01) Annex G.

5.3 Dual seal equipment

5.3.1 Primary seal leakage test

Test in accordance with 5.2.4.

5.3.2 Primary seal burst pressure test

Test in accordance with 5.2.5.

5.3.3 Venting pressure determination

Where a vent or drain is provided between the primary and secondary process seals, the secondary seal
shall be shown by test to be compatible with the conditions (temperature, pressure, etc.) that would be
present upon failure of the primary seal. An evaluation or test shall be conducted to determine the worst
case venting pressure in case of a primary seal failure. This will be the pressure applied to the secondary
seal for a short period until the annunciation method has revealed the primary seal failure.

This test shall take into account the pressure and flow capacity of the worst case primary seal failure and
the pressure and flow capacity of the venting mechanism. The venting pressure may be arrived at
through theoretical means. In cases where rupture of an external wall of the equipment enclosure is
relied upon for venting, this test shall verify the burst pressure of the enclosure.

NOTE In most cases, primary seal failure is assumed to be a slow leak and the venting pressure is the same as the pressure at
which the vent opens. The manufacturer of the process seal shall specify the worst case primary seal failure.

5.3.4 Verification of annunciation effectiveness

The effectiveness of the primary seal failure annunciation method(s) shall be verified by failing the primary
seal and applying pressure to the equipment.

Annunciation methods include but are not limited to

• audible “whistle;"

• visible rupture or leakage;

• electronic detection; and

• predictable and detectable failure of the equipment to operate as intended.

5.3.5 Secondary seal leakage test

5.3.5.1 Equipment incorporating venting

//^:^^#^~^^""@:*":^$:~$^"#:$@""*^"@^*~~~*^~:^:#^""^~$\\

The seal shall withstand for 1 minute, without visible leakage, the application of a test pressure of 150%
of the maximum venting pressure as determined in 5.3.3.

5.3.5.2 Equipment not incorporating venting

The seal shall withstand for 1 minute, without visible leakage, the application of a test pressure of 150%
of the rated maximum working pressure of the equipment.

5.4 Verification of limited pressure effectiveness

An evaluation or test shall be conducted to determine that the worst case pressure at the premises wiring
connection will not exceed 1.5 kPa (6 in. of water) in case of a primary seal failure.

This test shall take into account the pressure and flow capacity of the worst case primary seal failure and
the pressure and flow capacity of the vent, drain or other means.
