    In the speech mentions Barack Obama is providing a farewell address to the citizens of America.

    Obama
    uses a sanguine and grateful tone using phrases like “it has been the honor of my life to serve you as
    president” and “kept me inspired, and kept me going” when referring to the citizens of America. His
    constant optimism and hope for a better future of unity and greatness creates an assuring and confident
    mood . The use of first-person perspective allows the listeners to relate to Obama on a more personal
    level. Presence

    Obama uses language and style to his leverage in the speech and some of the ways that he does this is
    by using inclusive language like “we”, “us” and “you” and everyday settings like “schools” and “farms”
    this allows the working class to remove any sense of being inferior to the president as they can now
    imagine him in their shoes doing everyday things. Obama refers to himself as a citizen multiple times
    once again creating a sense of intimacy.
    The structure of the text is cohesive and simple to understand, Obama uses parallel structure when
    reminiscing on the things he’s seen which emphasizes the connection between his experiences and
    creates a rhythmic flow.

    Throughout the speech Obama is providing insight on what he has learned during his 8 years of
    presidency. In paragraph 4 he is emphasizing the importance of unity and shines a light on average
    everyday work, putting it up on a pedestal and claiming it is something we should all strive to do
    “regardless of party” he says. Obama then uses a motivational tone and the repetition of the word “if”
    to provide situations and there solutions. The repetition of these imperative sentences portray Obama as
    a fatherly figure bestowing his wisdom and advice. he continues using personal pronouns in these
    examples creating a sense of power in the listeners where they feel that they can really make a change
    in the community.

    He end the speech once again expressing gratitude to the people of America and emphasizing the fact
    that they are all one which creates a full circle effect to the speech.

    The overall purpose of this speech is to inspire the citizens of America and provide a tone for Obama’s
    transition from president to now regular citizen.
