MUSIC OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

 RHYTHM is a recurring movement of sound or speech. An example of rhythm is

the rising and falling of someone's voice. An example of rhythm is someone
dancing in time to music.
 MELODY is a succession of pitches in rhythm. The melody is usually the most
memorable aspect of a song, the one the listener remembers and is able to
perform.
 HARMONY in music, the sound of two or more notes heard simultaneously. In
practice, this broad definition can also include some instances of notes sounded
one after the other.
 TIMBRE is what makes a particular musical instrument or human voice have a
different sound from another
 TEXTURE the pattern of sound created by the interaction of musical voices
 DYNAMICS means how quietly or loudly a piece of music should be played.
 FORM refers to the structure of a musical composition or performance.

CHARACTERISTICS OF 20TH-CENTURY MUSIC

20TH-century music is described as ECLECTIC. (a wide array of music)

Angular Contour alternating upward and downward directions of the melody

Disjunct Progressions refer to the wide leaps or intervals from one note to the next
IMPRESSIONISM (MUSIC)

 the music focuses on mood and atmosphere.

 a style that explores mood and atmosphere through the use of timbre,
orchestration, and progressive harmonic concepts.

CHARACTERISTICS OF IMPRESSIONISTIC MUSIC

 Neomodality
- by going back to the use of church modes
 Parallelism
- major and Minor having the same tonic scale
 Free Rhythms
 Wide Intervals

Claude Debussy's La Mer (“The Sea”) is not a literal portrait of the ocean. There is no
“program” or story, as we might hear in Beethoven's “Pastoral” Symphony or a Strauss-
tone poem. Instead, La Mer takes us deep into the world of atmosphere, metaphor,
and synesthesia (a blurring of senses).

EXPRESSIONISM (MUSIC)

 frequently includes a lot of dissonance, strong dynamics contrasts, rapid texture

changes, "distorted" melodies and harmonies, and angular melodies with wide
leaps.

Dissonance is created when using harmonic intervals or chords that create uneven
pitches. A baby crying, a person screaming and an alarm going off are all common
examples of dissonance.
