Exercise 2 - EN1740 2/8/2011

In creating parts with Pro/E it is often desirable to make copies of features within a part. In this exercise we will build a 3 x 2 rectangular array of countersunk holes and a radial array of 6 counter-bored holes. The picture below shows the part with both arrays constructed. The dimensions for the part are given in drawings at the end of this exercise. You can retrieve a copy of covplt.prt from the Supporting Materials section of the website.

Linear Array 1. Before we can build an array we must create the 'original' hole. - We will place the first hole at the upper left hand corner. Select the top face of the plate and click on the Hole Tool icon. In the graphics area drag each of the two drag handles and snap them onto the top and left faces respectively. Edit both linear dimensions to 16 units. In Dashboard edit if necessary: Hole Type - Sketched and click on Sketcher icon Countersink O.D. = 16, angle = 45o, I.D. = 8 In Sketcher make the profile and specify the depth of the hole with 20 to make sure it goes completely through the plate. Exit Sketcher and click on Check-icon on Dashboard.

2. Build the linear array Select the countersunk hole (it probably is already selected) and right-click; from pop-up menu select Pattern In the Dashboard select Dimensions icon and click in the first direction pattern dimension field (no Items are initially displayed). Zoom in as necessary and pick the x-direction of the locating dimension of the original hole (16); enter 74; enter 3 for the number of instances in the first direction. In the Dashboard click in the second direction pattern dimension field (no items are initially displayed). Zoom in as necessary and pick the z-direction of the locating dimension of the original hole (16); enter 88; leave 2 for the number of instances in the second direction. Click the Check-icon to create the pattern.

You should now see the resulting linear pattern of holes. In order to minimize distraction from model geometry, datums, dimensions, etc in complex models it is sometimes useful to suppress features. Before proceeding with the radial array, we will now suppress the display of the linear array of countersunk holes. In the Model Tree right-click Pattern(Hole) and select Suppress in the pop-up window. Confirm your action by clicking OK in the next window. Radial Array 1. Again we first need to create the 'original' counterbored hole. We will locate this hole on the top surface of the circular boss concentric to the A-1 axis and 30o off the DTM1 plane. Select the top face of the protrusion and click on the Hole Tool icon. In Dashboard: Hole Type: Sketched and click on Placement icon; select Radial. Now click in the field for Secondary references (no items are initially displayed in it).

Select the A-1 axis in the graphics window and edit the radius in Dashboard to make it 25. Drag the remaining drag handle to the DTM1 datum plane and edit angle to make it 30o. Again click the Sketcher icon to enter Sketcher mode. Counterbore O.D. = 12, depth = 6, I.D. = 6 In Sketcher make the profile and specify the depth of the hole with 30 to make sure it goes again totally through the part. Exit Sketcher and click on Check-icon on Dashboard.

2.

Build the radial array: Select the counterbored hole and right-click; from pop-up menu select Pattern In the Dashboard select Dimensions icon and click in the first direction pattern dimension field (no items are initially displayed). Zoom in as necessary and pick the angular direction of the locating dimension of the original hole (30o); enter 60; enter 6 for the number of instances in the angular direction. No need for a second direction here! Click the Check-icon, or the middle mouse-button in the graphics area to create the pattern.

You should now see the resulting radial pattern of holes. Activate the display of the suppressed countersunk holes. Select Edit Resume All, this will redisplay the linear array again. You are done; save the part.
