PIT Title: Prepared by:
RECTILINEAR TRANSLATION Instructor: ENGR. IZA MARIE G. LEOP

1. A person driving his car at 45 kph approaches an intersection just as the traffic light
turns yellow. He knows that the yellow light lasts only 2.0 sec before turning red and he
is 28 m from near side of the intersection. Should he try to stop or he speeds up to cross
the intersection before the light turns red? The intersection is 15 m wide. His car’s
maximum deceleration is -5.8 m/s2, whereas it can accelerate from 45 kph to 65 kph in 6
sec. Ignore the length of his car and his reaction time.

2. Small steel balls fall from rest through the opening at A at a steady rate of two per
second. Find the vertical separation “y” of two consecutive balls when the lower one has
dropped 4 m. Neglect air resistance.

4m

3. A particle is projected to the right from the position x = 0 with initial velocity of 9 m/s.
If the acceleration of the particle is defined by the relation a = -0.6v3/2 , where a is m/s2
and v is m/s. Determine (a) distance traveled by the particle at v = 4 m/s (b) the time
when v = 1 m/s and (c) the time when the particle travels 6 m.

4. An airplane lands on a level runway at the speed of 40 m/s. For the first three seconds
after touchdown, the reverse thrust of the propellers causes a deceleration of 3.2 m/s2.
For the next five seconds, the wheel brakes are applied producing an additional
deceleration of 1.8 m/s2. Then the reverse thrusters are shut down, and the plane is
brought to a stop with only the wheel brakes. Draw the acceleration, velocity, and
position diagrams. How far does the airplane travel on the runway before it comes to a
stop?

RECTILINEAR TRANSLATION
CURVILINEAR TRANSLATION Instructor: ENGR. IZA MARIE G. LEOP

1. A small airplane flying horizontally with a speed of 270 kph at an altitude of 150 m
above the ground drops a package at A. The package has a parachute which deploys
when it is directly above the target at C and allows the package to descend vertically at
the constant rate of 2 m/s. If the drop is designed so that the package is to reach the
ground 40 seconds after release at A, determine the horizontal lead “L” so that the
package hits the target. Neglect air resistance.
270 kph

150 m

2. Boat A moves with a constant velocity of 20 ft/s, starting from the position shown
below. Find the angle in order for the projectile to hit the boat 5 s after starting, under
the conditions given. How high is the hill above the water?

KINETICS OF PARTICLE

1. The coefficient of kinetic friction under block A in the figure below is 0.30 and under
block B is 0.20. Find the acceleration of the system and the tension in each chord.

2. Determine the acceleration of each weight in the figure below, assuming the pulleys to
be weightless and frictionless.

DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM
RECTILINEAR TRANSLATION Instructor: ENGR. IZA MARIE G. LEOP

1. The uniform block shown in the figure weighs 200 lb. It is pulled up the inclined plane
by the force P = 300 lb. Determine the maximum and minimum values of d so that the
block does not tip over as it slides up the incline. The coefficient of friction is 0.20.

2. The coefficient of kinetic friction under the sliding supports at A and B in the figure
below is 0.30. What force P will give the 600 lb door a leftward acceleration of 8.05
ft/sec2? What will be the normal pressure at A and B?
