Essay Questions
1. Water entering at 10°C is to be heated to 40°C in a tube of 0.02-m-ID at a mass flow rate
of 0.01 kg/s. The outside of the tube is wrapped with an insulated electric-heating element
(see Fig. Below) that produces a uniform flux of 15,000 W/m 2.

Figure Question No 1
a. Calculate Thermal Entrance Length and Hydrodynamics Entrance Length!
If flow is assumed as fully developed flow calculate:
b. the Reynolds number
c. the heat transfer coefficient
d. the length of pipe needed for a 30°C increase in average temperature
e. the inner tube surface temperature at the outlet
f. the friction factor
g. the pressure drop in the pipe
h. the pumping power required if the pump is 50% efficient.
2. Used engine oil can be recycled by a patented reprocessing system. Suppose that such a
system includes a process during which engine oil flows through a 1-cm-ID, 0.02-cm-wall
copper tube at the rate of 0.05 kg/s. The oil enters at 35°C and is to be heated to 45°C by
atmospheric-pressure steam condensing on the outside, as shown in Fig. 6.11. Calculate the
length of the tube required. Oil Properties at 40 C
Figure Question No 2
3. Determine the Nusselt number for water flowing at an average velocity of 10 ft/s in an
annulus formed between a 1-in.-OD tube and a 1.5-in.-ID tube as shown in Fig.
below.

Figure Question No 3

The water is at 180°F and is being cooled. The temperature of the inner wall
is 100°F, and the outer wall of the annulus is insulated. Neglect entrance effects and
compare the results obtained from all four equations in Table 6.3. The properties of
water are given below in engineering units.
Clue:
Hydraulic Diameter Anulus (Dh) = Do – Di
Do: Inside diameter of Outer Pipe
Di : Outside diameter of Inner Pipe

Konversi Satuan
Fahrenheit to Celsius => (1°F − 32) × 5/9 = -17.22°C
1 Inch = 0.0254 Meter
4. A 2-m x 3-m flat plate is suspended in a room, and is subjected to air flow parallel to its
surfaces along its 3-m-long side. The free stream temperature and velocity of air are 20˚C
and 7 m/s. The total drag force acting on the plate is measured to be 0.86 N. Determine
the average convection heat transfer coefficient for the plate (Figure below).

Multiple Choice Questions
PLEASE GIVE REASONS FOR EACH OF YOUR CHOICE!
5. Characteristics of steady-state (nonpulsating) laminar flow are:
(a) Flow velocity may have two or three components (u, v, or w).
(b) Velocity at the tube centerline is always constant.
(c) If a color dye is injected in the fully developed flow, it disperses immediately.
(d) Flow velocity components may be time dependent.
(e) None of these.
6. The boundary layer thickness of fully developed laminar flow in a circular tube at
a given axial location is the following fraction of the tube radius:
(a) 1/8 (b) 1/4 (c) 1/2 (d) 1 (e) 2 (f ) can’t tell
7. For constant-property hydrodynamically and thermally developed flow in a tube:
(a) The velocity profile is independent of x.
(b) The temperature profile is independent of x.
(c) The velocity profile is independent of x, but the temperature profile is dependent on x.
8. In a simultaneously developing flow in a circular tube, consider the velocity boundary layer
thickness as 10 mm. The approximate thickness in millimeters of the temperature boundary
layer for air, water and sodium flow will be (circle one number from each group):
(a) air: 5, 10, 15 mm (b) water: 5, 10, 15 mm (c) liquid sodium: 5, 10, 15 mm
