questions:
Candidates should attempt FOUR questions in all.
Question No.1 is compulsory. Out of the remaining FOUR questions
attempt any THREE.
All questions carry equal marks. The number of marks carried by a part of
a question is indicated against it.
Answers must be written in ENGLISH only.
Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations have their usual
standard meanings.
Assume suitable data, if necessary and indicate the same clearly.
Neat sketches may be drawn, wherever required.
All parts and sub-parts of a question are to be attempted together in the
answer book.

01(a). Oil with =876 kg/m3 and = 0.24 kg/m-s is flowing


through a 1.5 cm diameter pipe that discharges into the
atmosphere at 88 kPa. The absolute pressure 15 m
before the exit is measured to be 135 kPa. Determine
the flow rate of oil through the pipe if the pipe is (a)
horizontal, (b) inclined 8o upward from the horizontal,
and (c) inclined 8o downward from the horizontal.
Comment on the result .

01(b). Explain what is meant by separation of boundary layer.
Describe with sketches the methods to control
separation.

01(c). Two vessels, A and B each of volume 3 m3 may be
connected by a tube of negligible volume. Vessel A
contains air at 0.7 MPa, 95oC, while vessel B contains
air at 0.35 MPa, 205oC. Find the change of entropy
when A is connected to B by working from the first
principles and assuming the mixing to be complete and
adiabatic.

0.48 mm. The diameter of pipe is 0.68 m and length =

01(e). Give Kelvin Plancks and Clausius statements of the
second law of thermodynamics. Show that the violation
of Clausius statement violates Plancks statement.

02(a). Two pipes have length L each. One of them has a
diameter of D and other d. If the pipes are arranged in
parallel, the head loss is h for a discharge of Q m3/s.
When the pipes are connected in series, the head lost is
H for same discharge, Find the ratio of H to h, for
D = 2.25d. (All dimensions in m).

02(b). Steam enters a 15 cm diameter horizontal pipe as
saturated vapour at 5 bar with a velocity of 10 m/s and
exit at 4.5 bar and a quality of 0.95. Heat is transferred
to surroundings at 300 K from the pipe surface which is
at an average temperature of 400 K. Under the steady
state operating conditions, determine
(i) The exit velocity,
(ii) The rate of heat transfer from pipe surface in kW.

(iii) The rate of entropy production in kW/K, for the


control volume comprising of only pipe and its
contents and
(iv) The rate of entropy production for the enlarged
control volume that includes pipe, its contents and
the immediate surroundings.

02(c). Oil having a specific gravity of 0.85 is pumped through
a horizontal pipe 150 mm diameter and 1.22 km long.
The
quantity

efficiency of 65 % takes 10 h.P to drive the pump.
Taking friction factor in pipe is 64/Re. Determine the
kinematic viscosity of oil in stokes.

03(a). Two identical bodies of constant heat capacity which


are at temperatures T1 and T2 respectively are used as
reservoirs for a heat engine. If the bodies remain at
constant pressure and undergo no change of phase
determine the work obtainable from the engine when
both reservoirs attain a final temperature equal to Tf.
What is the condition for the work obtainable to be a
maximum internal energy and enthalpy of the air for
each of the processes. Sketch the path followed by each
of the processes on a single diagram.

03(b). Show that the maximum shear stress at the pipe wall
for laminar flow through a pipe of given diameter D

04(a). A hot spring produces water at a temperature of 56oC.


The water flows into a large take, with a mean
temperature of 14oC, at a rate of 0.1 m3 of water per
min. What is the rate of working of an ideal heat engine
which uses all the available energy ?

04(b). A 3.0 m long smooth model of a ship is towed in fresh
water at 3.0 m/s with a total measured drag of 70N. The
wetted surface of the model is 3.50 m2. Estimate (a) the
skin friction drag and (b) the wave drag. (=998 kg/m3
and v = 1.0106 m2/s)

04(c). The internal energy of air is given, at ordinary
temperatures, by U = U0 + 0.718t , where u is in kJ/kg,
u0 is any arbitrary value of u at 00C, kJ/kg, and t is
temperature in 0C.
Also for air, pv = 0.287 (t + 273)
where p is in kPa and is in m3/kg.
An evacuated bottle is fitted with a valve through
which air from the atmosphere, at 760 mm Hg and
250C, is allowed to flow slowly to fill the bottle. If no
heat is transferred to or from the air in the bottle, what
will its temperature be when the pressure in the bottle
reaches 760 mm Hg?

05.(a) Air enters an adiabatic compressors at atmospheric


conditions of 1 bar and 15oC and leaves at 5.5 bar. The
mass flow rate is 0.01 kg/s and the efficiency of the
compressor is 75%. After leaving the compressor, the
air is cooled to 40oC in an aftercooler. Calculate (a) the
power required to drive the compressor, and (b) the rate
of irreversibility for the overall process (compressor
and cooler).

05(b). Water at 60C flows between two large flat plates. The
lower plate moves to the left at a speed of 0.3 m/s. the
plate spacing is 3 mm and the flow is laminar.
Determine the pressure gradient required to produce
zero net flow at a cross section. (=4.7 104 Ns/m2 at
60C)

05(c). During flow over a flat plate the laminar boundary


layer undergoes a transition to turbulent boundary layer
as the flow proceeds in the downstream. It is observed
that a parabolic laminar profile is finally changed into a
1/7th power law velocity profile in the turbulent regime.
Find out the ratio of turbulent and laminar boundary
layers if the momentum flux within the boundary layer
remains constant.
