1. (5 points) Let S be defined

S = { (x, y, z) : 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 , 0 ≤ y ≤ 1 , z = sin(πx) sin(πy)}

Given an equation for the tangent plane at the point ( 1/2 , 1/2 , 1 ). Show your
work.

Solution:
We have

z = sin(πx) sin(πy)

Taking the differential

dz = π cos(πx) sin(πy)dx + π sin(πx) cos(πy)dy

Then for the plane at (x0 , y0 )

∆z = π cos(πx0 ) sin(πy0 )∆x + π sin(πx0 ) cos(πy0 )∆y

z − z0 = π cos(πx0 ) sin(πy0 )(x − x0 ) + π sin(πx0 ) cos(πy0 )(y − y0 )

As (x0 , y0 , z0 )) = (1/2, 1/2, 1), we have

z − 1 = π cos(π/2) sin(π/2)(x − x0 ) + π sin(π/2) cos(π/2)(y − y0 )

Then the equation for the tangent plane at (1/2,1/2,1) is

z−1 = 0

2. (5 points) Let the curve C be a square lying in the xy-plane with corners: 1)
(0,0,0); 2) (1,0,0); 3) (1,1,0); 4) (0,1,0) . The curve C is to be taken moving from
corner to corner in the order: 1) → 2) → 3) → 4) → 1) in straight line segments
ending back at the origin.

Let

F = (y + x2 )i + (z + y 3 )j + (x + exp(z 4 ))k

Evaluate
I
I = F · dr
C

Solution: Let S be the flat square whose boundary is C. Then by Stokes’

I ZZ

S

We evaluate the curl to get

∇×F = −i−j−k

The vector surface element is

dS = kdxdy

Then

(∇ × F ) · dS = (−i − j − k) · kdxdy = − dxdy

Then
ZZ ZZ
I = (∇ × F ) · dS = −dxdy = − 1
S S

Otherwise, we can perform the line integral directly.

First, we break up the curve

8. (5 points) Find the minimum value of

f (x, y, z) = x2 + y 2 + z 2

subject to the condition that

g(x, y, z) = x + y + z − 1 = 0

Solution: We use Lagrange multipliers

∇f = 2xi + 2yj + 2zk

∇g = i + j + k

Setting ∇f = λ∇g gives

2x = λ, 2y = λ, 2z = λ

and we have the constraint

x+y+z−1 = 0

The first three equations give

x = y = z ⇒ x = 1/3, y = 1/3, z = 1/3

Then the minimum is

1
f (1/3, 1/3, 1/3) = (1/3)2 + (1/3)2 + (1/3)2 =

9. (5 points) Let f : R2 → R be defined by

f (x, y) = exp(x + y) cos(y)

Give the linearization L(x, y) that gives the linear approximation of f (x, y) at a
point (x, y) near the origin (0, 0).

Solution:

fx (x, y) = exp(x+y) cos(y), fy (x, y) = − exp(x+y) sin(y)+exp(x+y) cos(y)

f (0, 0) = 1, fx (0, 0) = 1, fy (0, 0) = 1

L(x, y) = f (0, 0) + fx (0, 0)(x − 0) + fy (0, 0)(y − 0) = 1 + x + y
