Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition in which a person

has long-term patterns of unstable or explosive emotions (SAMHSA, 2023). It is one

of several "Cluster B" personality disorders that include dramatic and erratic
behavior. Personality disorders are chronic (long-term) maladaptive behavior
patterns that are inflexible and persistent, causing social problems and discomfort
(Cleveland Clinic, n.d.)

The term "borderline" refers to the idea that individuals with borderline personality
disorder (BPD) are on the border between neurosis and psychosis (British
Psychological Society (UK), 2009). This means that they exhibit traits from both
categories, which can make their condition difficult to diagnose and treat effectively.
They may experience extreme anxiety, depression, and mood swings (neurosis), as
well as have a tendency to engage in reckless behavior, have difficulty regulating
their emotions, and experience paranoia or dissociation (psychosis) . Furthermore, it
is used because it captures several key features of the disorder. These features
include unstable emotions, Instability in relationships, Impulsive and self-destructive
behavior, feeling emptiness and excessive anger(Smith, 2023). It also emphasizes
the complexity and nuance of this disorder, highlighting the need for specialized
treatment approaches that address each individual's unique needs.

Overall, the term "borderline" serves as a reminder that BPD is a complex disorder
that requires personalized treatment approaches. It signifies that individuals with
borderline personality disorder exist on the border between several different states,
struggling to maintain a stable sense of self and healthy relationships with others. By
acknowledging the multifaceted nature of this condition, individuals with BPD can
receive the support they need to manage their symptoms and improve their overall
well-being.
