BRIEF INTRODUCTION
This topic will tackle the function/use of each measuring instrument used in doing
mensuration task, like measuring currents, voltages, resistance, wattages, and other
important elements in electrical works.
ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: Direction: Read the important use and function of each type of instruments
Types of measuring instruments
A. Indicating instruments – instruments that indicate directly value of the quantity
being measured on the scale
B. Integrating instruments - instruments that combines two or more electrical
quantities to measure a single equivalent quantity.
C. Recording instruments – instruments that give a record of the variations of the
electrical quantity being measured over a period of time.
Symbol
Proper Use
and Connection
Set to correct range
Proper polarity for DC measurement
Should be connected in parallel to the device/supply being measured
Ammeter - Used to measure current
Symbol
Proper Use and Connection
Set to correct range
Proper polarity for DC measurement
Sample
Symbol devices which can be tested by an
ohmmeter is electronic devices, Heater, Motor winding,
Short circuit faults and others.
Proper Use
Set to proper range
Should be calibrated first before the measurement
Device to be tested should be power off / no supply
Should be connected in parallel to the circuit
or device being measured
Basic wattmeter
Wattmeter application
Kilo-Watt Hour Meter- Instrument that records the electrical energy consumption of
electrical equipment
Analog Digital
Clamp Meter- A handy ammeter that can measure current without having a connection to
the circuit and measures only AC not DC
Test light – use to test the line wire or circuit if there is current in it.
Mega Ohmmeter (Megger) Insulation Tester - An ohmmeter that can measure very high
insulation resistance strength between two conductors
Activity 2:
A. Identify the measuring instruments that measures voltage and current.
B. Identify the measuring instruments that can measure both alternative current (AC)
and direct current (DC).
REMEMBER
Think of our life without electricity in today’s generation? Did you think it will stay the
same? Pretty sure it will not, and our life will incomplete. We need electricity for every
purpose, like working on a computer, using washing machines, or escaping the summer heat
with the aid of air conditions. Everything’s needs electricity to operate. However, we need to
ensure whether everything’s working appropriately and accurately in our electrical supplies
and equipment’s. That’s why we have electrical measuring instruments to ensure the safety
of all appliances, equipment’s and electrical supplies.
