For our project, we decided we needed to frame our content around the
opinion of the parties affected. We decided to use one of the most popular
qualitative methodologies which is conducting an interview.
The first question was structured around the main idea itself. Respondents
were asked to detect differences in the different parenting styles. The
second question revolved around the changes that take place as the child
grows up. Respondents, including the young children, noticed a very visible
difference here. The last question asked them to get into the shoes of the
child and think about what he/she goes through. This set of questions gave
us a considerable amount of information to conclude and form this project.
report
Over time, parenting styles have evolved, leading to a significant shift in the role
of parents in a child's life. Modern parenting emphasizes a more nurturing and
emotionally supportive approach, prioritizing open communication and mutual
respect. Parents today are more inclined to be mentors and guides, fostering
independence and critical thinking in their children, compared to earlier
authoritarian or dictatorial styles. This shift aims to create a supportive
environment that encourages a child's holistic development while valuing their
individuality and emotional well-being.
According to the data our group has collected, there is a common thread in the
responses of the participants - the communication is more open-ended and less
authoritarian.
Almost all participants agreed that in the past, parents primarily held an
authoritative role, emphasizing strict discipline and conformity to societal
norms. They were seen as the ultimate authority figures, and children were
expected to follow instructions without question. This approach often lacked
emotional connection and understanding of a child's individual needs and
feelings.
When asked about the impact of the different parenting styles, participants
gave mixed responses. Some participants responded that while newer parenting
styles led to "friend and respect" relationships between them and their children,
others think that along with good effects, the new styles have a few drawbacks
as well such as misuse of parents' friendliness by the child, entitled children
indulging in bullying, etc.
However, overall the general belief was that each parenting style has its own
advantages and disadvantages, and it is preferred that parents take the best of
both styles according to their children's needs. Since the "one style fits all"
approach does not work in parenting.
article
Parenting, the art and science of raising children, is a timeless endeavor that holds
profound significance in shaping the future of individuals and society at large. The
importance of parenting cannot be overstated, as it serves as the foundation upon
which a child's character, values, and worldview are built. Effective parenting
encompasses a myriad of responsibilities, from instilling core values to providing
emotional support, fostering educational growth, and preparing children for the
challenges of adulthood.
Over the years, parenting style has changed significantly due to a variety of social,
cultural, economic, technological, and psychological factors. Change in parenting
style has been multifaceted. As per data collected through our survey, it is seen
that there has been a shift from authoritarian parenting style to permissive
parenting style. Authoritarian parenting style is parent-driven where parents tend
to inculcate discipline among children by instilling fear in them. According to our
interviewees, 'beating' and 'bashing' were quite common among millennial parents
and teachers. Permissive parenting is child-driven and is characterized by high
levels of warmth and responsiveness but low levels of control and discipline.
Instead of dictating strict guidelines, they often allow their children considerable
freedom in making their own decisions. One of the main reasons for this shift is a
change in psychology of children over time. Nowadays, children have to face a lot
of pressure to survive in this super-competitive world and may also suffer
depression for not being able to cope up. In such cases, strict parenting will put
more pressure on children and may do more harm than good. Also, Gen-Z tends to
oppose the domination of their parents over them and believe in having their own
freedom and space. Excessive domination results in conflicts and creates a
generational gap between them.
Technology has become an integral part of family life, and the concept of digital
parenting refers to the strategies and practices parents use to navigate and
manage their children's engagement with technology. As technology continues to
evolve, digital parenting becomes increasingly relevant, addressing concerns
related to screen time, online safety, digital literacy, and the overall impact of
technology on children's well-being.
When asked about the change in the role of parents, many interviewees expressed
that although the general role of a parent of nurturing children and fostering their
development remains the same, the role of a parent has changed from just a
guardian and advisor to a friend. Nowadays, parents try to match their thinking
level with their children in order to understand them and try to shape the minds of
their children accordingly. As notably stated by Dr. Mahendra Kanojia, the ‘FR’
relationship has changed from ‘Fear and Respect’ to ‘Friend and Respect’.
According to him, an increase in technological awareness has also helped parents
to decrease the generational and emotional gap between them and their children.
Over the years, there has also been a notable shift in gender roles within the realm
of parenting. Traditional gender roles, which typically assigned specific
responsibilities and expectations based on gender, have evolved as societal
attitudes and norms have changed. There is a growing trend towards more
equitable sharing of parenting responsibilities between mothers and fathers.
Modern couples often seek a balance in caregiving duties, recognizing that both
parents play crucial roles in a child's development.
Changes in parenting over the years have impacted children both positively and
negatively. Due to an increase in warmth and openness of parents towards
children, children are able to express their problems and ideas without any
hesitation. This has led to the strengthening of emotional connections between
them. On the other hand, excessive freedom and very little control are often
misused by children. They tend to forget boundaries between an adult-parent and
a teenage-friend and show no respect to elders.
1] Harshita Kanojia:
The project not only broadened my understanding of the complexities
within family dynamics but also prompted me to reflect on the role of
external factors such as cultural changes, technological
advancements, and economic shifts in shaping parenting behaviors.
Recognizing the multifaceted nature of this subject highlighted the
importance of adopting a holistic approach to comprehend the
nuances inherent in generational differences. Taking on the role of a
leader in our recent project has been a transformative experience that
has allowed me to explore and develop key aspects of leadership. As I
reflect on my journey, I recognize the multifaceted nature of leadership
and the responsibilities that come with guiding a team toward a
common goal.
2] Medha Arora:
This project given to us by our English teachers really helped in gaining
an insight into a topic which was very relevant to me and yet was
largely ignored still. It helped me realize how lucky we actually have
been to be able to communicate with our parents openly without
unnecessary restrictions on us. I also had to prepare a report which
proved to be very insightful for me.
3] Aayushi Patel:
While doing this project, I came to know many things our parents had
done for us and what more we need to do for our next generation. I got
much support from this group; they gave me ideas and inspiration on
what to write and how I can frame it.
4] Hansini V:
This project has helped me to know and acknowledge the importance of
the difference in perspective of the current generation and the previous
generation. I am grateful for this project as my understanding has
increased by discussing an important topic with my parents.
5] Vaidehi Rathod:
This English project was very different from the projects I've received in
the past years. As we got the freedom to choose our own topic which
actually created curiosity and interest in completing the project. I had
always noticed the evident difference between the parenting styles but
this project provided a deeper perspective in every aspect. I found the
group to be cooperative as well. The leader also made sure everybody
was considered. Overall, it was an educative but enjoyable project.
6] Adrija Das
According to me, researching parenting styles provided valuable
experience in cooperation, communication, and commitment. I also
learned the correct methodology of conducting the research, of taking an
interview and analysing the data obtained. I think parenting
styles have shifted from an emphasis on discipline to emotional
intelligence and open communication. Digital parenting has become
increasingly relevant due to the impact of technology on children's well-
being. Fathers are increasingly involved in caregiving. I also think that a
mix of authoritarian and permissive parenting is recommended to balance
freedom with responsibility and respect.
