Twin Candelabras Scarf
Twin Candelabras Scarf
Twin Candelabras Scarf
The Twin Candelabras Scarf is a standard rectangular scarf that features a cabled
border on both ends, and a body worked in Russian Candelabra Lace. I chose to
work this pattern in fingering weight yarn (Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light), and
also to limit the size of the scarf to the amount of yarn on this skein, which was 420
yards, however this pattern can easily be modified to be wider and/or longer if you
have more yarn on hand. It would also look great in any weight except perhaps
bulky weight yarn. My one skein scarf ended up being 11 inches in width, and 6 feet
4 inches in length once blocked. Full written instructions and charts are included in
the pattern.
Materials
** 1 skein (420 yards) Madelinetosh’s Tosh Merino Light yarn in fingering weight (Well Water shade). I used almost of
this entire skein. As noted in the description, you can work this pattern in any weight (except bulky), or size you would
like if you have enough yarn on hand.
**cable needle
Gauge
If you are trying to stay at 1 skein of 420 yards in Madelinetosh fingering weight for this project like I did, you will need
to make sure you are not knitting at a looser gauge than I do. This should not be too hard considering I have discovered
I am a slightly “loose” knitter. My gauge in garter stitch for this yarn (remember to block before measuring!) is 6
stitches and 6 rows to the inch, which I worked on U.S. Size 2 needles.
Abbreviations
K: knit
P: purl
Rep: repeat
3/3 RC: 6 stitch Right Cable. Slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in back. Knit 3 stitches, and then knit 3 stitches
from cable needle.
Instructions
Cast on 58 stitches using the Lace Cast On Technique so the border will be stretchy. If you aren’t familiar with how to do
this, here is a link to a video that demonstrates this cast on method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPagekwVzW8
Knit 2 rows, and then begin knitting the Soft Serve Cables Border. The odd numbered rows are the right side of the
scarf, while all even rows are the wrong side. You will be working the border pattern 3 times through.
Row 1(RS): P2, k2, p2, *k6, (p2, k2) twice, p2; rep from * to the last 4 sts, then k2, p2.
Row 2(WS): K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rows 3-4: Repeat rows 1-2.
Row 5: P2, k2, p2, *3/3 RC, p2, (k2, p2) twice; rep from * to the last 4 sts, then k2, p2.
Row 6: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
For every row of the body of the scarf, slip first stitch purl-wise, knit 5, work row directions (23 sts that are charted) two
times, knit 5, then knit the last stitch through the back loop.
Remember: For every row of the body of the scarf, slip first stitch purl-wise, knit 5, work row directions (23 sts that are
charted) twice through, knit 5, then knit the last stitch through the back loop.
Continue working these same 12 rows until you have about 12 grams of your yarn left if you are using the same yarn I
did and trying to use only 1 skein of yarn for this scarf. I was able to repeat this pattern 24 times before I had to start
working the border on the other end.
On your last time through the pattern, after you have worked all 12 rows, work Rows 1-4 one more time before you
begin the other side border.
Knit 2 more rows. Repeat the directions for the Soft Serve Border exactly as you did on the first side, working the border
pattern through 3 times. Knit 2 more rows, then bind off all stitches on a right side row in an elastic, stretchy bind off,
block and enjoy! Any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at Pam @ [email protected] .
