Yarn Used: Malabrigo merino worsted color Olive (100% merino, 100gr / 216yd )
Quantity: 1 skein
Gauge: 21sts for 4” with 5mm needles
You will need plastic or cardboard to make the brim. I used a waxed cardboard from an
orange juice container (with plastic wrap to keep it waterproof). Whichever material you
choose, be sure to select a colour that will not be visible through your yarn, even if the
brim is knit at a tighter gauge.
Needles: 4mm straight / 4.5mm straight / 5mm circular and dpns.
Instructions are given for 2 sizes, S/M and M/L. M/L instructions are in brackets.
Abreviations:
RS: right side
WS: wrong side
Sl: slip
K2tog: knit 2st together
K3tog: knit 3st together
BO: Bind off
CO: Cast on.
Headband:
With 4.5mm, CO 7sts.
RS: Sl1, K6
WS P7
Continue those 2 rows until you have 145 (165) rows (or enough to comfortably fit your
head when joining beginning and end of band)
BO all stitches and make a seam to join beginning and end of headband.
Hat:
Pick up 145 (165) sts along edge of headband (not the edge with the slipped stitches) and
start knitting with 5mm circular needles. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of
your row.
Row 1: K 28 (32), SL 1. Repeat till end of row
Row 2: K all stitches
Repeat those 2 row till piece measures 3 ½ inches from edge of headband (ending with
row 1)
Brim:
Pick up 30st starting 1 ¼” left from headband seam and ending 4 1/2” right from
headband seam with 4mm needles. It will be tight, but it’s normal, that will make the
brim shape
The brim is knit in stockinette stitch and follows the decreases and increases detailed
below.
Increases are done with knitting on cast on method.
Seam the edges of your brim, then place the rigid cap inside (your rigid cap must fit
perfectly in your knitting to have a curve). Refer to pattern below as a guide, but
remember that you can adjust the brim with your knitting. Once cap is fit snugly in the
brim of your hat, make a seam with the edge of headband (WS).
Fake tab:
With 4mm needles, Co 8 sts. Work in moss stitch for 4 rows.
Continue for 1 ½ inches in the following pattern:
