Attending the webinar: "Meet A Scientist: Igniting Change and Eco-nnecting with Social
Entrepreneurs" was such an eye-opening experience for a college student like me. It felt like
stepping into a busy virtual room filled with curious people. Hence, I learned much about how
science and business can work together to solve environmental problems, and the event was full
of new ideas and connections between scientists and entrepreneurs. Each talk and chat taught me
something new and made me want to do more to help the planet. Moreover, it was an enjoyable
experience as I have a deep appreciation for nature and a strong commitment to environmental
care and sustainability advocacy.
A significant takeaway from the webinar was its notable benefit to the La Sallian
community. The event was designed to equip the La Sallian community with the tools and
perspectives required for socially and environmentally conscious entrepreneurship. By
emphasizing the importance of sustainability and social responsibility within entrepreneurship,
we gained invaluable insights into how we could contribute positively to our communities and
the environment. The focus on empowering the La Sallian community provided us with practical
skills and inspired a sense of purpose and commitment to making a meaningful impact in the
world. Furthermore, the webinar went beyond simply empowering the La Sallian community. It
also showed how important it is to mix social sciences with entrepreneurship. Through insightful
discussions and practical examples, the speaker demonstrated how incorporating social sciences
principles into entrepreneurship can lead to more ethical and sustainable business ventures. This
emphasis on responsible business practices not only aligns with the values of the La Sallian
community but also reflects a broader shift towards a more socially aware approach to business
and commerce.
As the speaker mentioned: “For aspiring social entrepreneurs, there should be an element
of clarity.” This surprisingly caught my attention as it was direct to the point. The main idea from
the speaker's talk is that it's really important for people who want to start businesses that help
society to be very clear about what they want to do. This means knowing exactly what their goals
are, what they want to achieve, and how they want to make a difference in the world. In a sense,
clarity will help them explain their mission well, get support from others who are interested, and
deal with problems more confidently. When there is clarity about what they're trying to do, they
can stay on track, make smart choices, and in the end, really make a positive difference in their
communities.
“Only a dead fish go with the flow.” In the world of social entrepreneurship, going with
the flow isn't enough to make a real difference. Social entrepreneurs use science and technology
to swim against the current and find new ways to solve big problems. They don't just accept
things as they are; they innovate and create solutions to improve the world. Therefore, rather
than passively drifting along, they actively seek out ways to make a positive impact, using their
creativity and determination to tackle social, cultural, and environmental challenges head-on.
After attending the webinar, I could now define social entrepreneurship. I discovered that
social entrepreneurship is when people or groups develop ideas and actions to solve societal,
cultural, or environmental problems while also making money. It's like using science and
technology to find creative ways to help people and the planet. For example, someone might
invent a new gadget that cleans up pollution or creates renewable energy while aiming to make a
positive impact on the world. In that case, social entrepreneurship is about using innovation and
business smarts to make the world a better place for everyone. It's about using our brains and
teamwork to fix broken things in the world, whether helping people in need, protecting our
planet, or preserving our culture.
