HANDRAIL CONSTRUCTIONS

AERON FIBERGLASS HANDRAIL offer now various solutions for different situations. All systems are designed and
tested according to the relevant standards. Systems are designed to satisfy both the End User in terms of
performance as well as the Contractor in terms of ease of installation and costs

We provide:
Design/costing services
Applicable test certificates
All components in kit form
Site supervision if required

Handrail construction includes precisely manufactured Fiberglass profiles by automatic pultrusion technology. It
includes top rail, mid rails, kick plate (also known as toe guard) and vertical post. Accessories like connectors,
vertical post shoe (also called stanchion) and various hardware are available in kit form for ease of contractor.

TYPE OF LOAD ON HANDRAILS
Live load

The minimum specified load applied horizontally, externally or internally, on the required minimum height of a
required railing is:

 3.0 kN/m for open tribunes without fixed seats and for evacuation averages of tribunes, stadium,
grandstands and arenas;
 1.0 kN concentrated at any location on the railing, access bridge to equipment platforms, adjoining
stairways and other similar locations where it is unlikely that a large number of persons meet; and
 0.75 kN/m or 1.0 kN concentrated at any location on the railing, if the situation applies to locations other
than those described in above points

Constituent elements of railings, including horizontal and vertical members must be designed to resist to a load of
0.5 kN on an area of 100 mm laterally, at any location of the element or elements where it produces a maximum
effect. The minimum required specified load applied vertically on the top part of the required railing is 1.5 kN/m
and it is not mandatory to consider that this load will occur simultaneously with the horizontal load indicated
above.

Wind loads

For the railing system with tempered glass (tempered glass series), the wind load must be considered according
to Part 4 of the National Building Code. But in our case, as all the profiles used in the construction of Handrails are
closed type and hence the effect of wind load can be neglected.

P= Iw.q.Ce.Cg.Cp

p - static pressure applied vertically

Iw - risk coefficient that is equal to 1 for the calculation of the ultimate limit state and equal to 0.75 for the
calculation of the service limit state
q - reference dynamic pressure that fluctuates according to the region (indicated in Volume II of the NBC 2010)
Ce - wind exposure coefficient that may vary depending on the height of the railing.

Load factor depending upon height of handrails

Height Height coefficient for live load

500 mm 2.1
600 mm 1.75
700 mm 1.5
800 mm 1.3
900 mm 1.2
1067 mm 1.0
1100 mm 0.95
1200 mm 0.88
1300 mm 0.8

A. VERTICAL POST TO C CHANNEL FITTING

B. VERTICAL POST TO I BEAM FITTING

C. VERTICAL POST TO ANGLE FROM I-BEAM

8
D. VERTICAL POST TO CONCRETE PLATFORM

9
2. OVER THE PLATFORM
A. VERTICAL POST DULY EMBEDDED

B. VERTICAL POST MOUNTED ON COMPOSITE SHOE

PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLATION OF HANDRAIL

 Cut top rail, intermediate rail and toe-guard (kick plate) to length.
 Use level to make posts vertical and tighten attachment bolts.
 Dry fit top-rail into tops of posts and adjust to proper location.
 Drill a hole through the center of the top-rail and vertical post intersections. Fix 2 rivets (one on each side)
at all posts to secure the top-rail.
 Dry fit intermediate rail into square holes of vertical posts and slide into position. Mark all rail and vertical
post intersections on all sides of intermediate rail.
 Drill a hole through the center of the intermediate rail and vertical post intersections. Install 2 rivets (one
on each side) at all posts to secure the intermediate rail.
 Align bottom of kick-plate above walking surface duly parallel.
 Drill hole through center of kick-plate at Vertical posts.
 Install kick-plate to posts using hex bolt.

6. USING LEVEL, PLACE THE VERTICAL POST STRAIGHT & FIX TWO HEX BOLTS IN PERPENDICULAR DIRECTION FOR
PERFECT STABILITY

7. DRY FIT THE INTERMEDIATE RAILS INTO THE VERTICAL POSTS BY SLIDING.

8. SLIDE TOP RAIL ONTO THE VERTICAL POST

9. FIX TOP RAIL AND INTERMEDIATE RAIL WITH RIVETS PROVIDED IN THE KIT

10. FOR BENDS USE ANGLE PLATES AND ELBOWS FOR ROUND SECTIONS

11. FIX ALL THE BENDS USING RIVET

12
PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLATION OF INCLINED HANDRAIL

 Cut top rail, intermediate rail and toe-guard (kick plate) to length.
 Slide intermediate rail through inclined posts.
 Mount vertical posts to stairway stringer with top-rail at 32” height as measured from the work line (as
per OSHA) of stringer.
 Use level to make posts vertical and tighten attachment bolts.
 With rails in proper location, mark area in contact with posts.
 Replace toprail onto post tops and slide midrail through posts to proper location.
 Tighten post attachment bolts.
 Install 2 rivets to each rail and vertical post intersection.
