2. ABSTRACT
Plastic bans are crucial measures aimed at reducing environmental pollution and promoting
sustainability. These bans target single-use plastics like bags, straws, and cutlery which
contribute significantly to plastic waste. Successful implementation of plastic bans requires
widespread public awareness and cooperation.
Under the Rural Outreach Program, efforts were made to raise awareness about the ban on
plastic by conducting visits to both shops and homes in villages. The objective was to educate
residents about the harmful effects of plastic and encourage them to discontinue its use. A total
of 40 households and shops were visited during this initiative.

3. OBJECTIVES:
• Educate rural communities about the environmental impact of plastic pollution and the
necessity of implementing plastic bans.

• Raise public awareness about the health risks associated with plastic use, such as the
release of harmful chemicals, and promote the adoption of plastic-free alternatives to improve
public health.

• Foster community involvement and participation through direct outreach efforts,

engaging both households and local businesses.

• Encourage the use of sustainable alternatives and recycling to reduce the environmental
impact of plastic disposal.

• Ensure that rural residents understand the regulations surrounding plastic bans and are
equipped to comply with them effectively.

• Raise awareness about plastic pollution, encouraging a collective effort towards a

plastic-free environment.

• Empower individuals with the knowledge and resources needed to advocate for and

sustain plastic-free initiatives within their communities.

4. ACTIVITY OUTCOME (AOs)

1. Enhanced Awareness: The campaign raised public awareness about the environmental
impact of plastic use, encouraging a sense of responsibility to reduce plastic consumption.

2. Long-term Sustainability: Establishment of a solid foundation for ongoing efforts

towards reducing plastic usage and promoting environmental sustainability in rural areas.

3.Enhanced knowledge: Improved understanding of waste management practices, including

segregation and proper disposal methods, leading to more responsible behaviour.

4. Behavioural Shifts: Observable changes in behaviour as individuals start reducing their

reliance on single-use plastics and opt for eco-friendly alternatives.

5. Environmental Impact: The campaign made positive changes in the local environment
due to reduced plastic usage.

5. PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs)

1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering

fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering
problems.

2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyse complex
engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of
mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

3. Design / development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems

and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with
appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and
environmental considerations.
4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and
research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data.

5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and
modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modelling to complex
engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to
assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent
responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.

7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering

solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of,
and need for sustainable development.

8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities
and norms of the engineering practice.

9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or

leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.

10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the

engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend
and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and
give and receive clear instructions.

11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and

understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one's own work,
as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to
engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological
change.
