This Written assignment will be analysing critically the production design and the visual concepts of the film Alien made in 1979. The main points of attention this assignment will look at are feminism and how that comes out in the visual of the film, H G Giger whom was the concept artist and what makes the alien in alien such an iconic figure that one once seeing it would never forget. The information to back up this written assignment will be coming from books, DVD and the web. From the web this assignment will look at some reviews of the film and some general information about H G Giger. From books comes forth information about the film, how it was made ect, also information on feminism, artists and views. The DVD sorce will help back up general information about the film Bibliography Book on alien from a friend (do not have the book yet but will be getting it very soon) Freud, Sigmun,(2003), The Uncanny, Penguin Reviews http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/alien/ (Accessed 5 NOV 2011) Multi-Media

7 The First Men in the Moon was written in 1901 by H G Wells whom has written over 80 books in his life. Born in 1866, Bromley he was later educated at the Normal School of Science in London. Until 1895 he went through many jobs including journalism which also later helped him in his writing career. After 1895, he became a full time writer and wrote such books as The Invisible Man(1897), When the Sleeper Awakes and then in 1901, The First Men in the Moon. At the time of the book being written man had still yet to concur the trip to the moon and there was a lot of fascination of what it would be like there and if there would be anything there. That is the thought what made this book, a question in which mystery still stood. Later there would be an adaption of the book and would be made into a film in 1964 called First Men in the Moon. Also the book would later be re-released 100 year later in Gollanczs SF Masterworks series. Plot for the book. It is set in 20th century England when man had yet concurred the moon. An industrialist name Bedford and a scientist name Cavor become entwined by fate. Together they make a space ship named Shere which hurls them to space with the help of an invention made by Cavor. Cavor hopes to find living life forms while Bedford goes in search of profitable. Once there they find Selenites, which are insect-like being whom live beneath the surface of the moon. Then things go terribly wrong, which Bedford and Cavor have over come if they whish to get home. This is the main IM for all three and the concept of colure, texture, perspective and atmosphere I whish to have in my peaces.
These are my IMs for the three. I have tried to look at a number of things to broaden my ideas in terms of color, texture, shapes and lighting.
10 This is showing depth and trying to get some atmosphere. This is key to me so it dues not become flat like most of my drawings have become.
These are what the plants could look like. These are key, I may not end up using them but the shapes and the structure I think will.
This is the kind of out come I think would look good, however I do know I need to improve the perspective (thanks to my lovely partners) and am working on this but still this is key as I think it will give of atmosphere and give me a lot to play around with (shadows ect)
11 I am stuck between many ideas for the 2nd part as there are three good scene which I could do, two being very similar, being tunnles.
These are some rubbings I did to try and get another look for the caves and tunnels. These are key not only to what I am drawing but how I am drawing as I generally start with lines which sometimes works but other times I cant see what I want to see, with this I can see where the light is coming from ect. The other one of the three however is in a very wide open space which could look very good if I get the perspective correct(which needs work) however I fear I will get to a stage where I am just adding things to take up the space that is free.
12
I struggled to come up with ideas for the 3rd and final part, however when talking to Ann I came up with an idea that I believe will fit the aliens and the place of positioning. I tried to keep some fragments of human technology and alien and come up with something organic. These are key as they are the 1st to match what I whish it to be like. I am still at this moment coming up with more ideas however these are what you could call the father of those ideas I am coming up with now.

Chrissie Peters said... Hello Creative Partner! Hope your computer man turned up and you can now use everything! It should help loads with reading the PDFs of the story, i've found the highlight-and-grab-in-pdf-thing really useful. I'm not in today cos I'm poorlyflu and don't want to splutter over everyone in the lecture theatre so I will see you tomorrow for Maya. Which I will enjoy. 27 October 2011 03:29 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------George Whiley said... really nice mike! The simpleness of the image makes it that more dramatic! 28 October 2011 12:22 mikesmallwood said... cheers. Yeah I quite like how its quite simple. Though I would have never have done it this way if we actually had all the tablets to go around as I was using a mouse so I could not draw very good and used the lasso which worked well I think. 28 October 2011 12:26 Chrissie Peters said... The little people at the top make it look vast, very dramatic! 31 October 2011 06:59 mikesmallwood said... :) your the 1st so far to pick that up as i asked a friend what she thought of it and she could not tell what it was(which ill have to address later on) 1 November 2011 05:09 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chrissie Peters said... hiya, just thinking...try playing with some different perspectives, all your thumbnails are very ordinary...rock---space to look---rock sort of thing. There are some good ones here, about half way down. http://shanghey.wordpress.com/ 5 November 2011 11:05 Chrissie Peters said... Also, google Mountain Biking, you get some wicked perspective shots. 5 November 2011 11:07
George Whiley said... I agree with Chrissie, perspective seems to be the key in creating a dramatic space! btw this new background seems to attract your attention away from your actual work, just a hint :)

It also massively comes across as organic yet still feels warm and homie. GOOD WORK !!! 31 October 2011 03:31 mikesmallwood said... hey partner! Im only seeing one review so far and no more brill thumbnails!! I know you have done more as i saw you doing them :) you need to get everything up here so i can see and coment. and get your reviews done if you have not all ready. as we have seem 4 films so far so try and get it all done by weekend or somthing, give your self a deadline or else you will fall behind and have a hard stressful time of getting it done last minete and we do not want that do we:) 3 November 2011 12:06 mikesmallwood said... some more sexy stuff here!!!has a grate feel and atmosphere as phill rightly pointed out however it feels a bit to smooth if you get me. Like the rocks for example you could do with a bit more texture and then i think it would go from sexy to epic :) keep up the good work 7 November 2011 03:45 mikesmallwood said...
