INTRODUCTION

Coals and charcoals are most commonly used on

industries and households as fuels. But with the ongo-
ing rise of its production costs and its staggering de-
cline of availability, we must turn into using alternative
sources. Materials coming from green wastes called
“biomasses” are discovered to be able to replace these
burnable fuels, through recycling process.

This is also an added solution to deforestation be-

cause the large cutting of trees to generate charcoal is
mitigated, which helps for a cleaner environment. It al-
so avoids pollution because the materials that are used
are mainly recycled wood wastes.
MATERIALS

 1 liter Charcoal Dusts

 1 liter Sawdust
 Paper wastes
 1/4 kl Starch
 2 cups Lukewarm Water
 2 liters Boiling Water

 Scissors
 Strainer
 Measuring cup
 Molder
 Mixing Bowl
 Empty Container
PROCEDURE
Procedure 1
1. Soak shredded/stripped papers with sawdust in water
for at least two (2) days—or until paper strips be-
came soft and gooey. (Cover nose for strong odor)
2. Strain charcoal dusts for better binding process.
Grind bigger bits and strain again until powdered.

Procedure 2
1. Dissolve starch in lukewarm water and mix it into
boiling water.
2. Keep stirring the mixture until it thickens.
3. Pour starch mixture into soaked paper strips and
sawdust, along with strained charcoal dusts. Mix all
ingredients together.

Procedure 3
1. While still warm, scoop a cup of overall mixture and
put it into molder and press it until most liquids are
drained.
2. Gathered all processed briquettes and let it dry under
sunlight for three (3) to five (5) days—or until it be-
come brittle.
RESULTS
The produced “biomass” briquettes are tested in a tra-
ditional stove (Kalan) for its burning time.

The average burning time for a batch which consists of

mostly six (6) to nine (9) briquettes is about an hour or
so. This could cook at least a batch of food e.g. rice
etc.

Since our briquette is much more denser than a regular

charcoal/coal chunks, it will a longer time to start its
fire.

When burning, the briquettes will most likely release a

lot of smoke because it has been soaked in water.

Ashes are accumulated and stays at place.

DISCUSSION

The results are mostly a success, the briquettes have a

potential to be an alternative fuel. The briquettes have
long time duration and when burned, the ashes still in
shape as the briquettes. The advantage of using this is
higher compared to normal fuels, as it cost more mon-
ey and the supply is limited, where as the charcoal bri-
quettes only used a recycled materials. But its disad-
vantage is that it has a lot of give off of smoke and also
its longer fire starting time. As a recommendation for
further product improvement, accelerants like Sodium
Nitrate can boost up the burning time and its heat con-
tent.

CONCLUSION

Biomass briquettes nowadays are widely manufactured

in many countries with the variety of ingredients to re-
cycle for a new source of fuel. So the main purpose of
this research study is to popularize the process of recy-
cling wastes to help the environment and provide addi-
tional help to society.
