Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able
to:
• 1. Demonstrate the ability to differentiate and select relevant
information presented in academic sources. (A3)
• 2. Demonstrate the ability to organise relevant and appropriate
information to write a summary. (A4)
• 3. Synthesize relevant information from relevant sources to produce
a written and oral executive summary. (A5)

and time for the presentation- 10-12 minutes per student.

• The course focuses on developing students’ ability to write
summaries and executive summaries.

Syllabus Content
• The course will focus on the following areas:
• 3.1 Employing the sub-skills required for summary writing
• 3.1.1 identifying main ideas and relevant supporting details (recap-
ELC501 course) stated and implied main idea; major supporting
details
• 3.1.2 organising the main points of the text (coherence of the text)
• 3.1.3 paraphrasing (techniques in paraphrasing)
• 3.1.4 writing summaries based on a variety of texts (research articles)

SYLLABUS CONTENT
Employing the sub-skills required for executive
summary writing:

• →defining the issue/ problem


• →identifying the purpose
• →stating significant considerations/ limitations/ scope
• →stating major ideas/ findings
• →stating major conclusions
• →stating recommendations/ decisions
Test 1-December 2020
• Please do Question 3 –Paraphrasing. Please submit your answers in
Week 4.
Test 2- 30%
• Mentorship Programmes in the workplace.
• Please do upload the summary in Week 4 folder. Do not forget to
paraphrase ie using a combination of paraphrasing techniques.
• We will cover Executive Summary Task/Assignment in our 2nd ODL
meeting.
