Fall 2023, Dr. Cetiner & Dr. Yılmaz

Homework #1

1) The amount of mustard dispensed from a machine at The Hotdog

Emporium is normally distributed with a mean of 0.9g and a standard
deviation of 0.1g. If the machine is used 500 times, approximately how
many times will it be expected to dispense 1 or more grams of mustard.

2) Professor Zihni Sinir has 184 students in his college mathematics

lecture class. The scores on the midterm exam are normally
distributed with a mean of 72.3 and a standard deviation of
8.9. How many students in the class can be expected to receive a
score between 82 and 90? Express answer to the nearest student.

3) A machine is used to fill soda bottles. The amount of soda dispensed into each
bottle varies slightly. Suppose the amount of soda dispensed into the bottles
is normally distributed. If at least 99% of the bottles must have between 585
and 595 milliliters of soda, find the greatest standard deviation, to the nearest
hundredth, that can be allowed.

4) A group of 625 students has a mean age of 15.8 years with a standard deviation of 0.6 years. The ages
are normally distributed. How many students are younger than 16.2 years? Express answer to
the nearest student.

5) An orifice meter is used to measure the volume flow rate in a pipe. It takes 12 readings (in m3/s):
0.0182, 0.0188, 0.0179, 0.0183, 0.0182, 0.0176, 0.0191, 0.0185, 0.0184, 0.0180, 0.0178, and 0.0186.
The true volume flow rate is 0.017920 m3/s.

(a) Estimate the bias error (also called the systematic error) of the instrument.

(b) For each reading, estimate the accuracy error (inaccuracy).

(c) For each reading, estimate the precision error.

(d) Calculate the sum of all the inaccuracies and the sum of all the precision errors. Can you find some
significance to these sums? Discuss.

(e) Calculate the mean bias error of all the readings as a percentage.
6) An electronic tachometer takes the following rotation rate readings (in rpm): 1531, 1528, 1544, 1532,
1537, 1540, 1529, 1541, 1535, and 1533. The true rotation rate is 1532.5 rpm.

(a) Estimate the bias (systematic) error of the instrument.

(b) For each reading, estimate the accuracy error (inaccuracy).

(c) For each reading, estimate the precision error.

(d) Calculate the sum of all the inaccuracies and the sum of all the precision errors. Is there any
significance to these sums?

7) A digital multimeter is used to measure the resistance and current through a resistor at 120.8Ω (Ohms)
and 0.05A, respectively. The uncertainty in both of these measurements has been previously
determined to be ±0.3Ω and ±0.001A, respectively. Determine the uncertainty in the power dissipated
by the resistor using the equation:
𝑃 = 𝐼2 𝑅

8) The force generated from the rodless chamber in a pneumatic cylinder is given as:

𝜋 2
𝑓= 𝑑 𝑝
4

where d is the diameter of the cylinder bore and p is the chamber pressure. The cylinder pressure is
measured at 724kPa with an uncertainty of ±5.5psia. The cylinder diameter is given from the cylinder
manufacturer to be 5.6 ± 0.015cm. Determine the uncertainty in the generated force.

9) The potential energy of a compressed spring is:

1
𝑈 = 𝑘𝑥 2
2

where k is the spring constant and x is the length of spring deflection. The spring constant is known to
be 201 ± 7 Newtons per meter. The spring deflection has been measured to be 0.11 ± 0.004 meters.
Determine the uncertainty in the potential energy of the deflected spring.
