TOPIC OUTLINE
#1 Introduction to chemical hazards
Explosive Materials are substances that can explode and cause serious damage when
exposed to heat, shock, or friction. Examples include gunpowder, dynamite, and fireworks.
Reactive Chemicals are materials that can release hazardous vapors or react violently
when mixed with other substances. Examples include acids, bases, and oxidizers.
HEALTH HAZARDS
02
Toxic substances: Toxic substances are any substance that is poisonous or
harmful to living organisms, such as plants, animals, and humans. They can
cause a range of health effects, from minor irritation to death.
Irritants and Corrosives: These are substances that can cause irritation or
damage to the skin, eyes, or other tissues. They can be either physical or
chemical in nature, and can range from mild to severe in their effects.
HEALTH HAZARDS
02
Carcinogens: Carcinogens are substances that can cause cancer in living organisms.
These can be either natural or man-made, and can range in toxicity from mild to
severe.
Allergens: Allergens are substances that can trigger an allergic reaction in some
individuals. These can be either natural or man-made, and can range in severity from
mild to severe.
Gas under Pressure: Gas under pressure is hazardous because it can explode if the
pressure is not released in a controlled way. This can cause property damage, injury, or
03 even death.
Oxidizers and Hazardous to Environment: Oxidizers are hazardous because they
can react with other substances to produce explosive, toxic, or corrosive
materials. This can pose a serious threat to health and the environment.
Hazardous To Ozone Layer: Substances that are hazardous to the ozone layer are
those that contain chlorine or bromine. These substances can react with ozone
molecules in the atmosphere, breaking them down and causing holes in the ozone
layer. This can lead to increased levels of harmful UV radiation reaching the Earth's
surface.
COMMON CHEMICAL
HAZARDS AND THEIR
EFFECTS
Lead: Lead exposure can lead to organ
damage and nervous system damage, as well
as anemia, headaches, hearing loss, and
reproductive problems.
