INTRODUCTION
English Writing Skills C1.2 is designed to develop students’ English writing skills at level 5 as
characterised in the Vietnamese Standardized Test of English Proficiency. This intensive skill-
focused course book aims to give students exposure to a series of sample letters and essays as
well as guided writing activities which assist them in using appropriate layout, register and
language in a letter or an essay. Students are also provided opportunities to practise using a
range of cohesive devices, methods of development and supporting techniques to produce a
well-structured, coherent and fully-developed piece of work.
English writing skills C1.2 is a task-based course book consisting of three parts: Letter writing,
Essay writing and Revision and Practice Tests. In the first part, each unit begins with a listening
activity to get students exposed to a sample letter. The layout and useful language for letter
opening and closing as well as other language functions are also provided. Students are required
to work in pairs/groups to do a series of guided writing activities, which enables them to step by
step develop letter writing skills and produce a letter using appropriate layout, register, style
and language. The second part – essay writing - provides students with theory about writing
different kinds of essays and guided-to-free writing tasks. These task-based activities aim to
develop students’ writing skills in terms of text organization, idea development, using
appropriate supporting techniques and methods of development as well as using cohesive
devices to achieve coherence. The error correction tasks raise students’ awareness of common
mistakes in writing such as spelling, capital letters and punctuation, organization, link words
etc., which improves learners’ overall writing skills. The final part is devoted to practice tests,
which prepares students for the final exam.
English writing skills C1.2 encourages interactive and collaborative learning. Therefore,
students are expected to take an active part in all stages from analysing the sample writing,
doing guided writing tasks to free writing and peer review. Hopefully, this course book will be a
useful guide for successful English writing.
