Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English Grade 5 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Analyzing
How Visual and Multimedia Elements Contribute to the Meaning of a Text!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from public
institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the
module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own
learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the
tasks included in the module.

For the Learner:

Welcome to the English Grade 5 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Analyzing
How Visual and Multimedia Elements Contribute to the Meaning of a Text!

Images, pictures and drawings in texts we read have great impact on our understanding of
the author’s tone and purpose. In films and videos we view, graphics, sound and animation
also affect our reception of their message. These are part of visual and multimedia elements.
You are now bound to look into how these add or contribute to the text you read. This skill is
very much important in sharpening your comprehension.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided
and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the
contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

2
What I Need to Know

This module will assist you in encouraging the learners to analyze how visual
and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning of a text.
Please help the learners in sharing their ideas and knowledge from their
experiences so that there will be collaboration and learning will be easy.
Answers are written at the back of this module. Inculcate to the learners the
value of honesty while answering this module.
For the learner
Many things happen around us. In every event, there is always a reason behind. For
every action, there is a result or outcome.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. identify elements of visual and multimedia;
2. answer questions on texts using images; and
3. analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to meaning of a text.

What I Know
Blacken the circle ( ) if the statement is True and put a ( x ) cross inside if it
does not. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
1. Visual elements are images, such as photographs and drawings.
2. Multimedia elements include sound, video, graphics, and animations.
3. Pictures and drawings in texts we read do not have any effect on how we
understand them.
4. The tone of a text is the attitude that an author takes toward the subject or
the audience.
5. Visual and multimedia elements in a text help the readers feel the tone of
the author.
6. Animation in films helps attract the audience viewing it thus facilitating
understanding of the information demonstrated in it.
7. Photographs only distract reading from reading the text.
8. Multimedia is not only limited to films, videos and power point
presentations but also includes other electronic media like CDs, internet
and others which are digitally processed.
9. In multimedia, audio refers to sound.
10. It is important that we analyse the visual elements of what we read to have
clearer understanding of the text.

Notes to the Teacher
The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in the
development of this competency including the schema or background
knowledge which may reinforce learning. This module will help the
learners bridge the gap of learning to attain mastery of the lesson in its
spiral progression.

What’s New

Look at the pictures below. Can you tell in what fairy tale these happened?

Yes! You got it right. It’s “Cinderella”. Nearly everyone is familiar with the tale
of Cinderella. One of the most popular versions of the story was written in 1697 by
the French author Charles Perrault. This version included a wicked stepmother, a
fairy godmother, and a glass slipper. Since then, many different versions have been
written.
Like most children’s stories, printed copies of “Cinderella” are usually
illustrated. There are several film versions of the story as well (both animated and
with real-life actors). These visual and multimedia elements greatly affect the tone
and meaning of this familiar story.

5. How do illustrations help readers like you understand better the meanings of
stories or texts you read?

What Is It

Discussion

As what was mentioned in the last part of the passage above, visual and
multimedia elements greatly affect the tone and meaning of a text we read.
They help enrich our grasp of what the author likes to tell us.
Visual elements could be illustrations, photographs or diagrams. When you
are reading a story, illustrations that go with the story can do several things. One of
which is to help us better understand the words in the text. Illustrations can also help
set the tone of the writing. Tone refers to mood or emotions which the author intends
to relay to the reader. This might be serious, humorous, threatening, annoying, joyful
and others.
Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer controlled integration of
text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio(sound),
and any other media where every type of information can be represented, stored,
transmitted and processed digitally.
Let’s look into the following example.

Tommy cannot decide what sort of top he should

wear. Closing his eyes, he imagines all of the different
ones he has.

Without the image added to this text, what kind of “tops” will the reader
imagine that Tommy has? They may think that the author is referring to his t-shirts
but because of the picture, the meaning becomes clearer. This only shows why
illustrations and other visual elements are used for texts.

The Raft
by Jim LaMarche

That afternoon, I stood in Grandma’s yard and

watched my dad drive away. Dust rose up behind
our car as it disappeared into the pines.
“Well we can’t stand here all summer, “said
Grandma. “C mon, Nicky, it’s time for supper.”

12
“Honey or maple syrup on your cornbread?” Grandma asked.
“I don’t like cornbread,” I mumbled, poking my finger into the syrup pitcher
when she wasn’t looking.
“If you’re going to do that, you’d better wash up first,” she said. She had eyes
in the back of her head. “Bathroom’s through there.”

I pushed the doorway curtain aside and walked into what would have been a
living room in anyone else’s house. Books were scattered everywhere-on the tables,
on the chairs, even on the floor. Three of the walls were cluttered with sketches and
stuffed fish and charts of the river. Several fishing poles hung from the fourth with a
tackle box, a snorkel, and a mask on the floor
beneath them. It looked like a river rat’s workroom,
all right, except that in the middle of everything was
a half-finished carving of a bear.
“Been carving that old fellow for years,”
Grandma called from the kitchen. “The real one
hangs out at the dump. Now come get your supper,
before I feed it to him.”

1. How does the first illustration help us to understand how the boy is feeling?
_________________________________________________________________

2. Would you know how the boy was feeling without the illustration? Why?
___________________________________________________________

3. How does the second illustration add to the words that the author wrote?
___________________________________________________________

4. If you were going to draw an illustration for the story, what illustration would
you draw and why?
