Question 2
2.1 A 2 km long transmission-line cable consists of 19 identical strands of
copper, each 1.5 mm in diameter. The actual length of the conductor is
increased by 5%, due to the twist of the strands. The resistivity of copper
strand at 20℃ is 1.72 𝜇Ω-cm. Find the 20℃ ac resistance of the cable. (5)
Figure 2
2.3 The ABCD parameters of a 345 kV, three-phase overhead transmission line
are:
𝐴 = 𝐷 = 0.98182 + 𝑗0.0012447
𝐵 = 4.035 + 𝑗58.947
𝐶 = 𝑗0.00061137
The line delivers 400 MVA at 0.8 power factor lagging at 345 kV. Assume
the receiving end voltage as reference i.e. 𝑉 = 345 ∠0° kV.
2.3.1 Calculate the sending end voltage and current. (8)
2.3.2 Find the sending end real and reactive power. (2)
2.3.3 Compute the percentage voltage regulation. (2)
2.3.4 Determine the transmission line efficiency. (2)

constant 𝑅 of 0.05 per unit on a 600 MVA base. Assuming a fixed reference
power setting, what is the decrease in turbine mechanical power output if
the generator frequency increases by 0.01 Hz in steady state. (5)

Question 5
5.1 A three-phase, 600 MVA, 50 Hz, 11.8 kV, 4-pole steam turbine-generating
unit has an 𝐻 constant of 5 p.u.-s.
5.1.1 Determine 𝜔syn and 𝜔 syn. (4)
5.1.2 Calculate the kinetic energy in joules stored in the rotating masses at
synchronous speed. (2)
5.1.3 Determine the mechanical angular acceleration 𝛼 and electrical angular
acceleration 𝛼 if the unit is operating at synchronous speed with an
acceleration power of 600 MW. (4)
