1. The following results were obtained in an experiment to determine the formula of an

oxide of silicon.
Mass of crucible (empty) = 15.20g
Mass of crucible + silicon = 15.48g
Mass of crucible + oxide of silicon = 15.80g
a) Find the empirical formula of the oxide of silicon
b) If the Mr of the oxide of silicon is 60, what is its molecular formula?
2. This question is about the preparation of salts.

(a) Zinc chloride is a soluble salt

It is prepared by the reaction of an insoluble base with a dilute acid.

The equation for this reaction is shown.

ZnO(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl2(aq) + H2O(l)

A sample of 3.50g of zinc oxide is added to 50.0cm3 of 1.20mol/dm3 hydrochloric

acid.

(i) Show by calculation that the zinc oxide is in excess.

3. Oxides of nitrogen such as nitrogen monoxide, NO, are atmospheric pollutants.

The exhaust gas from a car engine contains 0.00200% by volume of nitrogen monoxide
(a) Calculate the number of molecules of nitrogen monoxide in 960dm3 of exhaust gas at
room temperature and pressure.

One mole of any gas contains 6.02 × 1023 molecules.

4. Dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with aqueous sodium carbonate.

2HCl + Na2CO3 → 2NaCl + H2O + CO2

A student titrates 20.0cm3 of 0.0250 mol/dm3 aqueous sodium carbonate with dilute
hydrochloric acid using methyl orange as an indicator.
A volume of 15.5cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid reacts exactly with the 0.0250mol/dm3
aqueous sodium carbonate.

a. Calculate the concentration, in mol/dm3 , of the dilute hydrochloric acid.

b. Calculate the volume, measured at r.t.p., of carbon dioxide produced, in cm3, when
2.65g of sodium carbonate reacts with excess hydrochloric acid.

5. 30 cm3 of CO2 gas given off when excess MgCO3 is added to 25.0cm3 of 0.400mol/dm3
HCl at room temperature and pressure.

MgCO3 + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2O + CO2

Use the following steps.

 Calculate the number of moles of HCl in 25.0cm3 of 0.400mol/dm3 of acid.
 Determine the number of moles of CO2 gas given off

6. The ammonia formed reacts with nitrogen dioxide to form nitrogen and water.

Balance the equation for this reaction.

..........NO2 + ..........NH3 → ..........N2 + 12H2O

7. 135 moles of urea, (NH2)2CO, is stored in the tank of a car.

Calculate the mass, in kg, of the stored (NH2)2 CO.

8. Ester Y has the following composition by mass:

C, 58.82%; H, 9.80%; O, 31.37%.

Calculate the empirical formula of ester Y

9. Ester Z has the empirical formula C3H6O and a relative molecular mass of 116.

Calculate the molecular formula of ester Z

10. The formula for crystals of hydrated copper(II) sulfate is CuSO4•5H2O.

Hydrated copper(II) sulfate is made by reacting copper(II) oxide with dilute sulfuric acid.
The overall equation is shown.

CuO + H2SO4 + 4H2O → CuSO4•5H2O

Calculate the maximum mass of copper(II) sulfate crystals, CuSO4•5H2O, that can form
using the following steps.

Calculate the number of moles of H2SO4 in 50.0cm3 of 0.200mol/dm3 H2SO4

Deduce the number of moles of CuSO4•5H2O that can form.

The Mr of CuSO4•5H2O is 250.
Calculate the maximum mass of CuSO4•5H2O that can form

11. Which gas sample contains the most molecules?

A 24 dm3 of carbon dioxide, CO2

B 4 g of hydrogen, H2
C 36 dm3 of hydrogen chloride, HCl
D 14 g of nitrogen, N2

12. A student mixed together 25.0 cm3 of 1.00 mol / dm3 hydrochloric acid and 25.0 g of
calcium carbonate.
2HCl(aq) + CaCO3(s) → CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
