The student will be able to
Give the common units of
Define Pressure
define pressure and determine
pressure
the common units of pressure.
Gases are everywhere
What is Pressure ?
PRESSURE
• The amount of force exerted per unit area,
it is the force that is exerted by the gas. It is
determined by the flow of a high pressure region to a
low pressure region.
• The pressure of a gas is the force that the gas exerts on
the walls of its container.
• A property which determines the direction in which
mass flows.
• P= F/A.

a. What will happen if the pressure is much greater than what it should be?
b. What will happen if the pressure is much lower than what it should be?

If the pressure is too high, If the pressure is too low,

• car will bounce around ground
on the road • increases friction
• Traction suffers and so between the road and

distances • not only will your tires
• discomfort wear prematurely, but
they also could overheat
• can lead to tread
separation and an
accident
Common units of
Pressure
Here are the common units of Pressure
• Standard Atmosphere (atm) It is commonly and widely used unit for
pressure in chemistry. The 1 atm is equal to the pressure that supports a
column of mercury which is exactly 760 mmHg.
• Torr (or mmHg) mmHg means millimeter of mercury, where it represents
the pressure exerted by a column of a mercury which exactly equals to
atmosphere. The unit mmHg is called torr, named after the Italian scientist
Evangelista Torricelli, who also invented Barometer, a device used to
measure the atmospheric pressure.
• Pounds per square inch (psi) If we say that gas exerts a pressure of 20 psi, it means
the pressure on the wall of the gas container is 20 pounds or the force per square
inch of the unit area. The atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.7 psi.
• Kilopascal (kPa) A kilopascal is equal to 1000 pascals (Pa). It is the SI unit for
pressure.
Conversion Factor:

1 atm = 760 mmHg = 760

torr = 101.3 kPa = 14.7 psi
1 kPa = 1000 Pa
Converting Between Pressure Units:
# Given what was asked
x = results
1 same unit of the given

Example # 1: Convert 1 atm to torr Example # 2: Convert 38.5 psi to kPa

1 atm 760 torr 38.5 psi 101.3 kPa

= x = x
1 1 atm 1 14.7 psi
= 760 torr
= 760 torr = 3900.05 kPa = 265.31 kPa
1 14.7
Example # 3: Convert 760 mmHg to psi Example # 4: Convert 5 atm to kPa

865 mmHg 14.7 psi 5 atm 101.3 kPa

= x = x
1 760 mmHg 1 1 atm
= 12715.5 psi = 17 psi = 506.5 kPa = 507 kPa
760 1
Example # 5: The pressure of a gas is 340 torr. What is the pressure of this gas in atm?

= 340 torr x 1 atm

1 760 torr

= 340 atm = 0.45 atm

760

Example # 6: The air pressure inside the tires of a certain truck are 70 psi, what is this pressure in
units of torr?

= 70 psi 760 torr

x
1 14.7 psi
= 53200 torr = 3619.05 torr
14.7
Key points
• Pressure is the amount of force exerted per unit area
• Pressure can be high to low pressure region.
• Atmosphere (atm) , millimetes of mercury (mmHg or torr) ,
pounds per square inch (psi) , and kilopascal (kPa) are the
common units of pressure.
• Barometer a device used to measure the atmospheric
pressure.
• The torr is named after the scientist Evangelista Torricelli.
