Hippo Pattern
- 1-2 skeins of Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn color 80306 (I use exactly 1 skein,
but if you knit with medium density or have little experience in knitting toys, I advise you to
buy 2 skeins);
hook No. 4;
filler (holofiber);
plastic sew-on eyes 8 mm;
strong thread for sewing on eyes and attaching paws and tail (for example, nylon or dental
thread);
-
scissors;
needle with a wide eye.
Crochet conventions:
ch - air loop
sc - single crochet
inc - increase (knit two sc in one loop) dec - decrease (knit two sc together behind the front
walls)
We knit the head, torso and legs in one piece (the toy is knitted in a spiral).
First we knit a chain of two chain stitches.
We count 14 sc to the right from the hook and insert the hook into the 15th sc.
We grab the working thread and knit the 34th and 15th sc together (see photo).
Knit 2 more sc on both sides of the body.
Paws (2 pcs.)
We knit a chain of two chain stitches.
Muzzle:
Make sure that the density of knitting the head and muzzle is the same (otherwise the
proportions of the toy may be disrupted).
1st row: chain of 8 ch, inc in second loop from hook, 5 sc, 4 sc in last loop
We continue knitting on the other side of the chain: 5 sc, inc in the last stitch.
2nd row: 2 inc, 5 inc, 4 inc, 5 inc, 2 inc
3rd row: sc, inc, 9 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 9 sc, inc, sc (30)
4th row: (4 sc, inc)* 6 times (36)
5th row: (5 sc, inc) * 6 times (42)
6-11 row: 6 rows without changes.
Sew the muzzle between 11-12 rows (top) and 18-19 rows (bottom) of the head.
After we have sewn/stuffed the muzzle, we embroider the nostrils on it (3 stitches each) at a
distance of 4-5 loops from each other.
Ears:
We knit a chain of two chain stitches.
1st row: 6 sc in the second loop from the hook
2nd row: 6 inc (12)
3-6 row: 4 rows of 12 sc
Fold the piece and knit it on both walls.
We attach the ears at the level of 7-8 rows of the head. Before sewing, first fold and sew the
eyelet, as in the photo. If you are knitting a headdress for a hippopotamus, I advise you not
to sew on the ear right away, but to attach it with tailor’s pins. It is better to sew on after
trying on the cap in order to choose the ideal location.
We install the eyes (we draw the thread under the muzzle).
Chain of 10 ch, from the second loop from the hook 9 sc. If you are knitting pants for a
hippopotamus, then it is better to sew on the tail after the final fitting
