TEAMWORK
A Meerkats live in the desert, with enemies everywhere. So how do they survive? They have all the skills
to live there: they can hunt well, they can see their enemies from long distances. But they cannot survive
alone. They survive because of one skill — they live and work together as a team. Meerkats are very good
examples of the importance of teamwork. For them, teamwork is life or death.
B Meerkats live underground in large groups and have different group roles. Some watch for enemies,
others look after the young meerkats and others go hunting. Meerkats can't talk like humans, but they can
communicate with each other using different sounds. They can tell the others where the enemy is — an
eagle in the air flying towards them or a snake on the ground.
C So what can people learn about teamwork from these amazing animals? They show us the importance
of communication and making decisions. Teams are small groups of people who work together, but have
different skills. Teams usually make better decisions than one person alone. Because the team often has
people with different skills, it has more ideas than one person. With more ideas the group can choose the
best answer to the problem.
D But teamwork isn't always the best way to make decisions — it has problems. It sometimes takes a
long time and it usually needs good preparation. But because everyone in the team can help with making
decisions, people usually work hard and feel good to be in a team.

Students often have to work in groups at university. This is because many lecturers think there are
advantages to group work. You can share your ideas and find solutions to problems. You can develop
your communication skills. You can also learn about different cultures and improve your English.
However, there are problems with working in a group. Sometimes a very confident or talkative person can
dominate the group. Some group members never speak — they just sit in silence. Sometimes people
often want to talk and not listen. This might be because they think they are right and they think everyone
else is wrong.
Students can avoid these kinds of problems by making rules. For example, agree an agenda for the
meeting and how often the group will meet. Always agree the deadlines for the work. Usually it is helpful
for everyone to have a role. For example, one person takes notes, another does research, and another
produces PowerPoint slides.
Doing group work at university is an important experience that you also need for your future.
