FUTURE OF CHERRY FESTIVAL AIR SHOW AT RISK

Traverse City (March 7th, 2024)—Today National Cherry Festival (NCF) Executive Director Kat
Paye announced that the future of the National Cherry Festival Air Show is in peril due to ever
changing and baseless terms being levied against the NCF by the Northwest Regional Airport
Authority (NRAA), which operates the Cherry Capital Airport.

As has been the tradition for the last thirty-five years, NCF staff and volunteers have engaged in
extensive, good faith conversations to coordinate a safe, free, family-friendly air show that
serves as a key economic driver to Traverse City, the State of Michigan and beyond. The NCF’s
work has brought countless visitors to Northern Michigan while limiting the day-to-day impact
on the Cherry Capital Airport infrastructure during the air show.

During the extensive planning process that brings national military demonstration teams like
the U.S. Navy Blue Angels to Traverse City, NRAA has insisted on restrictions and terms that
would make the air show impossible. The end result is that NRAA is leveraging the airport to
exceed NRAA’s authority in the federally controlled airspace where the air show occurs.

“The National Cherry Festival looks forward to continuing its air show and programming for
adults and youth alike, providing countless science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)
opportunities to hundreds of thousands of people,” stated Executive Director Kat Paye. “Our
goal has always been to provide a safe, world-class air show with the support of our aviation
partners including air carriers that serve the airport, our colleagues at the International Council
of Air Shows, and the Federal Aviation Administration—all thanks to our military and
community partners dedicated to aerospace education opportunities. Our door remains open
for meaningful conversations that will lead to the success of our air show for generations to
come.”

The National Cherry Festival Air Show and Coast Guard Air Station Open Ramp take place this year June 28-30,
2024. Recently named one of the 24 best places to visit globally by CNN, Traverse City Michigan hosts the National
Cherry Festival, which brings more than 500,000 people to town for a week of family-friendly events, highlighted by
the Cherry Festival Air Show. Traditionally headlined by the US Navy Blue Angels or US Air Force Thunderbirds, the
airshow has been a long-standing festival tradition held for thirty-five years over the beautiful West Grand Traverse
