I’ve known I want to be a journalist for about two years. When I was 12, a famous football player came to our
school and I interviewed him for the school newspaper. I asked good questions, he gave interesting answers,

My life as a police officer

Ruth Garcia is a police officer. Our journalist, Mason Jones, went to meet her.

What do you do in a typical day?

I work four days and then I have four days off. Every day is different, but there are some things that you can
predict. For example, car accidents typically happen in the morning, and missing-person problems are more
common in the evenings.

Why did you choose to become a police officer?

I’ve always wanted to be a police officer. But when I finished school, I didn’t join the police force. I went to
university. I got a job as a police officer after that.

Is there anything that surprised you about the job?

We have to record everything that happens. If someone calls us out because they’re having an argument with
someone, we have to write down everything that they say. But, overall, there’s not as much paperwork as I
thought because we do most of our office work online.

What do you say to someone who wants to become a police officer?

It’s important to do your research. Read about the job and speak to people who do the job. Think long and hard
about if it’s the right job for you. The work is really interesting, but it’s often stressful, too.

What are the best things about your job?

Helping people is really satisfying. I love working with people, even when they don’t want me there! And I love
going to work and not knowing what’s going to happen each day.
