1. Develop your own list of historical figures that you consider to be national
heroes. Justify your chosen list and recommend which historical figures
may or may not fall within the criteria set by the National Heroes
Commission.

A. Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio:

- Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio or simply known as “Aling Eriang”,
is one of the fierce Filipinas who fought and supported Philippines
Revolution at her time. She was called as the Godmother of the
Philippines ever since she distributed generous amounts to make
the Philippine Revolution possible. She assisted many Katipuneros
and katipuneras by being one of the helpers who sponsored
several revolutionary items and equipment especially the SS
Bulusan which was one of the first warships that became the carrier
of food and war supplies and was used also as a transportation for
Filipinos. Moreover, Aling Eriang gave Php 18, 000 to Jose Rizal to
sustain the publication of his novels and La Solidaridad.
- Aling Eriang’s financial support does not justify her worth to be
considered as one of the Philippine heroes. She, as well, should be
considered one for her humble attitude despite being born
privileged. The fact that her advantages even in this time did not
cloud her sight that our country must be set free from the Spaniard
colonizers. Instead, she used it to support and be one of the people
who served as the backbone of it.
- Moreover, the danger of being part of this movement did not stop
her from continuing what she started. Even though her very own
husband got prisoned due to his part in the revolution as well, she
did not betray the group that it even cost her and her husband’s
safety. This much sacrifice is just one of the whole pictures of her
contribution in order to have our own freedom.

B. Trinidad Tecson:
- Trinidad Tecson is one of the few women who actually held a gun
and joined the fight in the Philippine Revolution. She is also
bestowed as “Ina ng Biak na Bato”. This was when the Filipinos
built a house in San Miguel, Bulacan to accommodate those who
are injured from the war and she was appointed to organize it.
Tecson encouraged several women to be part of this. This time, she
was also able to protect the said place when the Spaniards came to
ambush it.
- Tecson’s role in the Philippine revolution did not stop there. She
continued to fight alongside the Katipuneros and was able to
participate in various rebellions to free cities around the Philippines.
She traveled around the country, helping to reclaim lands, from
Bulacan to Zamboanga, sacrificing her safety in exchange for our
freedom.
- Her courage, despite being a woman in this generation, did not limit
her fighting spirit and showing her patriotism toward our country.
Her skills in being a leader and great warrior in this era served as a
symbol that a woman not only can serve at the back of the war, but
can also be one of those who are in the front line. Her bravery,
resilience and intelligence alongside her loyalty yielded her worth to
be considered as one of our Philippine heroes.

C. Teresa Magbanua:
- Teresa Magbanua, like Tecson, is one of the women who held guns
and fought alongside the Katipuneros. This started when the war
took place in Iloilo. She became a general in a military group
against the enemies. Her participation in the military was disagreed
by people who are part of it as well as his husband. However, their
opposition did not stop her from doing her work.
- Aside from her battle, she also joined the war between the
Philippines and America. At this time, Panay was almost taken over
by the opposing country not until her military entered the town of
Jaro with triumph in their hands. Her contribution to the military
gave her the recognition to be a prominent part of the military.
- Magbanua also took part in the World Way ||. Although she was not
as involved as before, she supported the Filipino troop with all that
she could. She sold most of her personal properties in pursuit of
supporting the financial need of the Filipino army. Even after her
husband’s death, she still insisted on selling their property in Iloilo
and giving it to help the guerilla, before settling at her sister’s
house. She died as a widow and childless but with the honor of
being our hero.
- Magbanua, is a few of those people who were able to participate in
three generation wars that took place and initiated to took over the
Philippines. The fact that being a woman, opposed by local military
officials and her own husband with her fights alongside the military,
did not stop her by proving that her gender will never stop her from
serving her country in any way she could. Her contributions gave
her the title of “Visayan of Joan Arc”.
