your notebook.

1. 5.

2. 6.

3. 7.

4. 8.
What`s New

Given ∆ ABC with the exterior angle on each vertex as shown:

Let the interior angles at A, B, C measure a, b, c respectively while the

exterior angles measure d, e, f.

Determine the following sum of angles:

a + d = _________
b + e = _________
c + f = _________
(a + d) + (b + e) + (c + f) = _________
(a + b+ c) + (d + e + f) = _________
a + b + c = _________
d + e + f = _________

What Is It

Everything you need to know about a polygon doesn’t necessarily fall

within its sides. You may need to find exterior angles as well as interior
angles when working with polygons:
An interior angle of a polygon is an
angle inside the polygon at one of its
vertices. ∠ Q is an interior angle of figure
QUAD.
An exterior angle of a polygon is an
angle outside the polygon formed by one of
its sides and the extension of an adjacent
side. ∠ ADZ , ∠ XUQ and ∠ YUA are exterior
angles of QUAD.
There are two types of angles associated with a convex polygon:
exterior angle and interior angle. An exterior angle of a convex polygon is an
angle that is both supplement and adjacent to one of its interior angles.
The sum of the measures of the interior angles of a polygon with n
sides is (n−2)180 ° .
Examples:
1. Find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of the convex
pentagon.
Solution:
Let S be the sum of the measures of the interior angles.
S=(n−2)180 °
¿ ( 5−2 ) 180
¿ ( 3 ) 180 °
S=540°
Therefore, the sum of the measures of the interior angles
of a convex pentagon is 540° .

2. How many sides does a convex polygon have if the sum of the
measures of its interior angles is 2 340° ?
Solution:

234 0 °=(n−2)180 °
234 0 °
=n−2
180 °
13=n−2
13+2=n
15=n

Therefore, the convex polygon has 15 sides.

Note: A regular polygon is a polygon with congruent sides and congruent
angles.
( n−2 ) 180 °
The measure of each interior angle of a regular polygon is
n
Example:
Find the measure of each interior angle of a regular hexagon.
Solution:
Since a hexagon has 6 sides, so n = 6
Let I be the measure of each interior angle of a regular hexagon.
( n−2 ) 180 °
Using the formula, I =
n
( 6−2 ) 180 °
I=
6
(4)180 °
I=
6
720°
I= I =120 °
6
Therefore, the measure of each interior angle of a regular
hexagon is 120 °

The sum of the measures of the exterior angles of a polygon is always

360° .
360°
The measure of each exterior angle of a regular polygon is , where
n
n = number of sides.
Examples:
1. Find the measure of each exterior angle
of the regular octagon.

Solution:
Let E be the measure of each exterior angle of a regular octagon.
360 ° 360 °
E= E=
8 8
E=45 °
Therefore, the measure of each exterior angle of a regular octagon
is 45 ° .
2. If an exterior angle of a regular polygon is 45 ° , how many sides
does the polygon have?
Solution:
Let E be the measure of an exterior angle of a regular
polygon
360 °
E=
n
360 °
45 ° =
n
45 ° n=360°
360 °
n=
45°
n=8

Therefore, the regular polygon has 8 sides.

There is also another formula in finding the measure of each interior angle
of a regular polygon which is by using the formula in finding the exterior
angle.

Since interior angle + exterior angle = 180° , the measure of an interior

angle of a regular polygon can also be solved by this formula
360° 360°
180 - n , where n is the formula in
finding the exterior angle of a
regular polygon.
Example:
Find the measure of each interior angle of a regular polygon with 36
sides.

Solution:
Let i be the measure of each interior angle of a regular
polygon with 36 sides.
360 °
i=180 °−
n
360 °
i=180 °−
36
i=180 °−10 °
i=170 °
Therefore, the measure of each interior angle of a regular
polygon with 36 sides is 170 ° .
How do you find the number of sides of a regular polygon given the measure
of its interior angle?

There is an easier way to solve this using the exterior angle.

Study the following example below.

Example:
How many sides does a regular polygon have if each interior
angle is 1 6 0 °?
Solution:
Remember that, interior angle + exterior angle = 180°
To find the measure of the exterior angle = 180° - interior angle.
So, let E be the exterior angle.
E=180° −1 6 0°
E=2 0°
360°
To find the number of sides, use the formula E=
n
36 0 °
2 0 °=
n
2 0 ° n=360 °
36 0 °
n=
20 °
n=18
Therefore, a regular polygon with interior angle of 1 6 0 °
has
18 sides.
What’s More

Directions: Answer the following questions and write it in your notebook.

A. Find the measure of each exterior angle of the following
regular polygons:

1. 2.

B. How many sides does a regular polygon have if each interior

angle is ________?

1. 120°

at one of its vertices.
 an exterior angle of a polygon is an angle outside the polygon
formed by one of its sides and the extension of an adjacent
side.
 the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a polygon
with n sides is (n−2)180.
 the measure of each interior angle of an equiangular n-gon is
( n−2 ) 180 360
or 180 - (the supplement of an exterior angle).
n n
