Different types of flooring IN CIVIL CONSTRUCTION

Types of floor finishes includes ceramic tiles, linoleum, vinyl, plain polished flooring, stamped concrete,
carpet, high density fiber board, rubberized, marble, T&G flooring, glass, and natural stones.
CERAMIC TILES is an organic, nonmetallic solid prepared by the action of heat and subsequent cooling.
Ceramic tiles are made from clay which is mined from the ground.
Ceramic are considered to be a multipurpose tile and can be used in several areas. Floors, walls,
countertops, patio’s etc. Some ceramic tile is usable outdoors; others are for use as indoor tile only.
Has various surface finishes and sizes
LINOLEUM – is a floor covering made from renewable materials such as solidified linseed oil (linoxyn),
pine rosin, ground cork dust, wood flour, and mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate most commonly
on a burlap or canvas backing; pigments are often added to the materials.
PLAIN POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORING
- Are energy efficient, hard surface, anti-slip, low maintenance and can be kept dust free. This is the
simplest, yet a decent type of flooring.
- Good for those who are looking for smooth, high luster floors that can replicate a look of polished
stone.
MARBLE FLOORING (a type of natural stone flooring)
- This is a metamorphic rock made from the joining of calcite (limestone) rock at high temperature
Usually used for the living room flooring, countertops, backsplashes etc.
GLASS FLOORING
- Used in commercial and residential structures. Special hollow glass blocks known as glass
pavers are often used in combination with metal frames.
- Usually employs toughened or tempered type of glass for load bearing floors.
VINYL
- Both in sheet and tile forms
- Vinyl flooring is a new type of resilient flooring in the market. It is made from plastic like PVC
(poly-vinyl chloride)
- Vinyl tiles are composed of colored vinyl chips formed into solid sheets of varying thicknesses by
heat and pressure and cut into 12 squares
- Vinyl is thicker than LINOLEUM which also costs less.
CARPET
- Is a textile floor covering consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing
- Carpets are commonly used in bedrooms and living rooms. Also used in hotels, schools etc.
- Carpets poses health risk since it accumulates dust that cause deterioration of indoor air that’s
why it is needed to be cleaned regularly to avoid build-up of bacteria

RUBBERIZED FLOORING
- Used in commercial and residential often seen on sports centers, playgrounds, public transit, stair
treads & public circulatory routes.
HDF (HIGH DENSITY FIBER BOARD)
- Hardboard also called high density fiberboard (HDF) is a type of fiberboard which is an
engineered wood product. HDF is a lot stronger than MDF (medium density fiberboard) and HDF
floor planks are joined thru T&G connections.
STAMPED CONCRETE
- Comes in panels, a concrete that is patterned to resemble brick, sate, stone, tile, wood and
various other patterns and textures. This type of flooring is commonly used in patios, sidewalks,
pool decks, garages, driveways and interior flooring.
NATURAL STONES
- Used for residential and the perfect cover for basement, garage, patio even in flood prone areas.
- There are three basic types of rock to make stone floors; sedimentary (travertine and limestone),
igneous (granite) and metamorphic (like slate and marble). This type of flooring is considered to
be the choice for privileged and elite like palaces and castles.
Sandstone is acknowledged for perfect finish, high textile strength, breakage resistance and
durability that’s why it is widely used for interior and exterior application since it is available in
different sizes and finished.
Limestone on the other hand was recognized for its strength as it doesn't blister upon exposing it to
water. It can be used in any weather and degree of temperature, cold or hot and hardly affects the
color and texture of limestone.
Quartzite Stone is widely used in wall cladding, roofing, flooring and for all types of interior and
exterior decorations because it is fireproof and non-slippery.
Slate stone (thin stones, flakes, colored gray to dark gray variants) this kind of stone is suitable for
interior and exterior such as cladding, roofing, flooring, driveways, pools etc.
Granite stone this one is usually used for countertop tables, high end floorings and walls. Its
dimension depends on various interior and exterior applications.
Cobblestone are used for old roads, to make pathways or pavements. It needs a little maintenance
anno paint.

TYPES OF ROOF SHEETS FOR HOUSE COST OF ROOFING SHEETS
WHY ROOFING SHEETS
The primary changes in the roofing sheets industry can be attributed to two reasons. First, the
growth in industrial applications in context to the Indian market second, consumers being
dissatisfied with the available conventional options and looking for more value from their
investments in roofing sheets.
This, in turn has created a higher demand for different kinds of sheets for protecting the roofs and
walls of establishments--domestic, commercial and industrial alike.

Different types and properties

CORRUGATED ROOFING SHEETS
Their corrugated design with ridges and grooves makes them stronger than before. The wavy
construction paves the way for increased strength across smaller surface areas.
Corrugated roof sheets are also a low maintenance option as they only require maintenance every 5-
10 years and they are ideally used for protecting garages, porches and sheds. Asbestos and non-
asbestos cemt sheets.

POLYCARBONATE ROOFING SHEETS

Polycarbonate roofing sheets are available in a variety of qualities and thicknesses. They are much
lighter in weight yet durable and resistant to breakage and cracks.
Roofing sheets are widely used in industrial and large scale commercial buildings. Low cost
maintenance.
Usually used in swimming pool areas, sky lighting, walkways and display signboards.
Foam backed and clear polycarbonate are the most commonly used types of polycarbonate sheets.

METAL ROOFING SHEETS

The roofing sheets made of metal usually comprise Zinc, Aluminium, Copper and Tin.
They can be customized to create rooftops varying on the basis of their price, durability, style, energy
efficiency, longevity and aesthetic value.
Possess high insulating and can withstand high winds, snow, hail torrential rains and fire.
Generally, they don’t rot, crack, split or break easily. Metal sheets are also resistant to attacks by
insects and pests.
PLASTIC ROOFING SHEETS
These sheets are the least preferred option for rooting applications in most places in the country.
Less durable than other types of rooting sheets, they are mainly used as garden sheds or for
covering temporary structures.
The better the quality of the plastic, the higher will be the price of the roofing sheet. This elevates the
overall cost of installation of plastic sheets. Examples: Fibre reinfored plastic (FRP), PVC, etc.
BEST ROOFING SHEET
The usage of RCC roofs, GI roofing sheets and asbestos cement sheets for roofing purposes are still
around and are here to stay for many years.
The affordable price of GI sheet is still capturing the attention of buyers for more reasons than one.
Assess your exact requirements and budget before setting out to buy the most suitable roofing
sheets as per your requirement. Along with conducting some research on your own.

VID 3: What is a roof?

A ROOF is the top covering of a building, including all materials and constructions necessary to
support it on the walls of the building or on uprights...
If you are considering changing or buying a new roof plenty of options for roofing in the Philippines
which are affordable and suited for a tropical country such as ours.
Here are some of the best roofing’s that we may encounter in the Philippines:
ASPHALT SHINGLES are commonly used in country style houses as they are very economical,
durable and easy to install and can come with a wide variety of colors. Its style can also work with
plenty of architectural designs. Depending on the quality of the materials and maintenance, this
type of roof can last up to 30 years.
Primary Type of Shingles

3-tab Asphalt Shingles

Dimensional Shingles

Luxury Shingles
METAL ROOFING another popular roofing in the Philippines is the metal roof it has twice the
lifespan to the asphalt shingles with 50-60 years of guarantee. A metal roof also has low
maintenance, is lightweight and very affordable. This type goes well with any residential types and
can come in almost any color. They also require less roofing expertise to install unlike asphalt or
wood. However, before you decide to use this type of roof over your home you must consider your
style and the area you live in.

DISADVANTAGES OF METAL ROOFING:

Noise may be irritating to some during rainy seasons
Accessibility as the metal roof might become slippery
It also dents pretty easily.
WOOD SHINGLES while not commonly used in residential housing or roofing in the Philippines.
Wood shingles are present in areas that are close to the sea or as a separate storage house
project,. Huts and other functions. This is because wood is not advisable to be used in fire prone
areas and extremely busy areas unless they are treated with a fire-resistant coating. In terms of
price, wood materials are generally more expensive. It is also important to note that wood is more
challenging to install for a roofing contractor.

SINGLE PLY ROOFING - Single-ply roofing is a popular choice used for commercial buildings.Their
large size minimizes the number of seams which are used to connect your roof materials
together.
If one isn't seamed or rather "fastened" properly, it could affect your roof's longevity.
There are two main types of single-ply roofing:
Thermoset
Thermoplastic
Though thermoset plastics and thermoplastics sound similar, they have very different properties.
Thermoset plastic is very resistant to high temperatures. This allows for flexible design
options, and can be cost effective. On the down side, it cannot be recycled, remolded or
reshaped after installation. Thermoplastics have the advantage of being highly recyclable and
can be reshaped but they can be slightly more expensive than thermosets.

CONCRETE OR CLAY ROOF TILES

- Concrete tiles cheaper than clay tiles
Both tiles offer many benefits including:
energy efficiency, low maintenance, appeal, hurricane and typhoon grade wind mitigation and fire
safety.
The clay tiles can vome in colors ranging from shades of white, yellow, orange and brown
. Both of which cannot be destroyed in.a fire and are exceptionally resistant to strong winds
So which type of roof are u gonna choose? Just remember that in selecting your roof type always
consider the ff
Surrounding, house design, and of course budget.
