 Welding of dissimilar metals is generally a challenging task
 Due to the differences in the chemical composition and thermal expansion
coefficients, the major problems likely to occur during welding would be
 dilution of weld metals
 solidification cracking and
 hot cracking
Introduction  Successful dissimilar welds are usually quantified by their good mechanical &
metallurgical properties

Material XXXX and YYYY
• High corrosion resistance,
• High strength
Material • Sounds good for high temperature applications
• Easily weldable and no pre/post heat treatments are
Selection required for similar combinations
Applications include
✓Oil and petroleum refineries
✓Thermal and nuclear power plants
✓Marine application

Title of the paper Journal & Year Authors Description Remarks
The combination is used in
the Umbilical Interface
Assembly for Space Station

Investigation of dissimilar JWRI, (2000) • SMAW process is employed ENiCrFe-3 filler wire is
Joints • This Combination is used in the oil & recommended;
petroleum refineries where they are Hot cracking tendency is
subjected to strong corrosive mediums eliminated on using the
such as SOx above filler wire
• ENiCu-7 and ENiCrFe-3 were the filler
metals
• Post weld heat treatment was
recommended to earn the benefits in
terms of mechanical properties

Gaps in the Literature

• The weldability, metallurgical, mechanical and corrosion properties of welded

dissimilar metals– Information is skimpy
• No specific emphasis is given on these dissimilar metal welding and the filler
metal’s choice in the behavior of weldments
• There is very limited information about structure-property relationships in
dissimilar welds between XXXX and YYYY in the previous studies unlike the similar
metal welds
• Although these metals are known for its corrosion properties, corrosion at high
temperature conditions especially in the molten salt environments have not been
reported hitherto
• Hot corrosion properties on welded XXXX and YYYYY is very scanty, particularly
those containing sulfidizing and chlorides environments
