FREE LESSON BOOK: VOICINGS TOOLKIT #PART 2 02

This lesson book goes with the ‘Voicings Toolkit #Part2’

video on @thekeyscoach Instagram page.

sus2
sus2 stands for suspended second. A sus2 triad
contains the root note (the main note of the chord), the
second, and the fifth.

For example, Csus2 contains the notes C (root), D (the

second) and G (the fifth).

C D G

In a sus2 triad, the third is replaced by the second.

sus2 (continued)

When you add a sus2 to major chords, it adds warmth and richness to the
usual sound of the chords.

Practice sus2 triads in all keys - get them under your fingers.

Exercise 1 (Chromatic)

Csus2 Dbsus2 Dsus2 Ebsus2 Esus2 Fsus2

F#sus2 Gsus2 Absus2 Asus2 Bbsus2 Bsus2 Csus2

Practice playing these voicings in both hands. You could also try playing them
with a metronome - start slow and then build up speed.

Exercise 2 (Circle of Fifths)

Take the voicing around the Circle of Fifths. You can either move clockwise or
anticlockwise. The example on the next page moves clockwise around the circle.

Exercise 2 (cont’d.)

Csus2 Gsus2 Dsus2 Asus2 Esus2 Bsus2

F#sus2 Dbsus2 Absus2 Ebsus2 Bbsus2 Fsus2 Csus2

Again, practice playing these voicings in both hands. You could also try
playing them with a metronome - start slow and then build up speed.

Csus2/E
In the video, the voicing played is Csus2/E. In other
words, a sus2 triad in the right hand, with an E as the
bass note in the left hand.

Exercise 3 (Chromatic)

Csus2/E Dbsus2/F Dsus2/F# Ebsus2/G Esus2/G# Fsus2/A

Gbsus2/Bb Gsus2/B Absus2/C Asus2/C# Bbsus2/D Bsus2/D# Csus2/E

While it’s useful to practice these voicings with the notation in front of you -
see if you can play through these voicings from memory. This will really make
sure they are comfortably under your fingers - rather than being ‘read’.

You could also practice taking this voicing both ways around the circle of
fifths - just like we did with the previous voicing.

Get Creative!
Whenever you learn a new voicing - it’s useful to find a
creative context to use the shape right away.

Write a short four or eight bar sequence that uses the

voicing in lots of places.
