Job Overview
You will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, engaging English as a Foreign Language lessons for
international children and teenagers. Lessons are lively, interactive, and fun. Learning activities help international
students develop accuracy, fluency, and confidence in spoken English. You will also successfully complete
administrative duties and assist with pastoral duties.

Essential Desirable
Legal • Eligible to work in the UK
Requirements • Aged 18 and over
Qualifications • First degree (any discipline) • Trinity LTCL Diploma TESOL, Cambridge
• CELTA, Trinity TESOL, BEd/PGCE (Primary DELTA or MA in Linguistics/TESOL
Education, English or MFL) or EFL Level 5 • Young Learner specialism e.g. TYLEC,
equivalent CELTA extension
Experience • Able to plan and deliver engaging lessons • Experience working with multi-lingual /
• Able to produce student centred, interactive international children/teenagers

Working Conditions
• You will work 6 days a week
• You will be asked to sign a waiver regarding the 48-hour working week
• You will have one 24-hour period off per week
• Our programmes are fast paced - expect the days to be long and the work to be intense
• You will be accommodated at the course centre, normally in a single room in a student residence
• Whether you are on or off duty, you will always be expected to put the welfare of the students and staff first
• Dress Code: smart casual (i.e. no casual/ripped jeans, T-shirts, shorts or flip flops)
Sample rota
Each week, you will be given your rota. Your time will be spent between teaching, planning, administrative duties &
meetings, and pastoral/social duties. The greyed-out areas show where an EFL teacher is on duty. Planning for lessons
usually takes place during the afternoons. Please note, this rota is illustrative.

Academic Programme
Maximum class size is 12* international students + 1 English Student Host
*In exceptional cases, to place students at their correct level, maximum class size may be marginally exceeded

• Prepare English Skills and English Workshop classes to an acceptably high standard
• Ensure that clear learning outcomes are presented to learners at the start of every
lesson and ticked off to signpost learning during lessons
• Provide clear instructions to the English Student Host
• Ensure lessons are engaging, relevant and fun; focusing on written and spoken English
• Prepare students for the end-of-week presentation; a wonderful opportunity to

Teacher and Social • Respond to feedback; the DoS regularly drops into class and offers ideas for

3rd summer • Maximise every opportunity for students to learn English both inside and outside the
classroom; ensuring students of different nationalities mix as much as possible
• Prepare students for the Trinity Graded Exam in Spoken English if required
“Planning and following up lessons is an important part of a teacher’s role. Here are some of the
admin duties you can expect as a part of your role:”
Daily:
• Produce lesson plans and attend teacher meetings
• Keep registers of attendance - inform DoS if a student is absent
• Record details of student behaviour and welfare onto the DS Portal
• Make sure that work in student folders is clearly marked and representative of DS
standards
Leo Weekly:
Academic Manager • Ensure that classroom displays are reflective of Discovery Summer’s standards
• Produce a weekly ‘learning menu’ and display it in your classroom
• Assist the Director of Studies with placement testing if required
• Complete a weekly academic report for each student

General
• Attend and participate in daily staff meetings, read the minutes of any
meetings you cannot attend
• Carry out airport duty (meeting students at the airport, accompanying them to
Jeremy the course centre, checking students in on departure) as required

Pastoral
• Sleep in a room near students
• Do wake-up/bedtime/mealtime duties as required
• Always ensure the safeguarding and welfare of students, supervising students
as required and responding sensitively to any pastoral matters

e.g. assisting with arts & crafts, sports, discos, talent shows, quizzes
