Josh: So do you have any good photos from your trip to the design museum, Alex?
Alex: Yes! Look. This is a 1 cardboard / stone house. It’s made of old boxes!
Josh: That’s an interesting idea … but what happens when it rains?
Alex:
They put bee’s 2 plastic / wax on the cardboard: that helps keep water out.
And you can put a 3 cotton / plastic sheet over it to stop the rain from getting
in. But these houses aren’t for people to live in for a long time. The 4 stone /
plastic house in this photo is different. It’s almost a thousand years old!
Josh:
Why are there are no windows? Light can only come in through the hole in
the roof.
Alex:
That’s because they didn’t have 5 glass / stone for windows a thousand years
ago. They didn’t use 6 metal / rubber very much back then either – only for
making tools. The Japanese used 7 rubber / bamboo for their houses – it’s a
really light, strong wood. People usually used 8 clay / wax to make things like
pots, and they used 9 wool / rubber from sheep for clothes and 10 leather /
wax from animal skins for outdoor shoes. So some things have changed, but
not everything!
