made significant contributions in Philippine science.
These scientists are also famous abroad especially in
different science disciplines: agriculture, mathematics,
physics, medicine, marine science, chemistry,
engineering, and biology.

• Famous Filipino scientist in the field of science.


1. Ramon Cabanos Barba
- Born: 1939, Philippines
- Education: BS in Agronomy (fruits), University of
the Philippines; MSc Horticulture, University of
Georgia (1963), PhD Horticulture, University of
Hawaii, (1967)
- For his outstanding research on tissue culture in
Philippine mangoes
- Developed a simple method for inducing early flowering in
mango plants.

2. Josefino Cacas Comiso


- Born: 1940, Philippines
- He is an American scientist. He was a leading
physical scientist at Goddard Space Flight
Center and National Aeronautics and Space
Administration.
- For his works on observing the characteristics of
Antarctica by using satellite images
- He has studied many polar processes and was among the first
researchers to report dramatic changes in the Arctic sea ice
cover and accelerated warming at high latitudes in the Northern
Hemisphere.

3. Jose Bejar Cruz Jr.


- Born: 1932, Philippines
- Jose B. Cruz has compiled an enviable record of
accomplishments in engineering research and
education.
- He was known internationally in the field of
electrical engineering; was elected as officer of
the famous Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering
- In research, he has made major contributions to the theory and
practice of automatic control.

4. Lourdes Jansuy Cruz


- Born: 1942, Philippines
- Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz is lauded for her research on
Conus geographus, a marine snail found in the
Philippines.
- She is notable for her research on sea snail
venom.
- Their research paved the way toward finding
practical uses for conotoxins, leading to breakthroughs in
neuroscience and medicine.

5. Fabian Millar Dayrit


- Born: 1953, Philippines
- He was known for his research on herbal medicine.
- Dr. Fabian Millar Dayrit is known for his
phytochemical work for the development of lagundi
as part of the National Integrated Research
Program on Medicinal Plants.

6. Rafael Dineros Guerrero III


- Born: 1944, Philippines
- He was known for his research on tilapia culture
- Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero was recognized because
of his scientific and technical contributions to the
growth of Sex Reversal and Hatchery
Techniques that help the commercial fabrication
of high yielding market-size tilapia in the
Philippines and other nations.
7. Enrique Mapua Ostrea Jr
- Born: 1941, Philippines
- Dr. Enrique M. Ostrea have significant
contributions in the field of pediatrics,
specifically in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia,
neonatal drug addiction and his pioneering
work on the detection of fetal exposure to
drugs, tobacco smoke, alcohol and
environmental toxicants by analysis of
meconium.
- He was known for for inventing the meconium drugs testing.

8. Lilian Formalejo Patena


- Born: 1953, Philippines
- She was recognized for doing research on
plant biotechnology
- She develops tissue culture for garlic
production

9. Mari-Jo Panganiban Ruiz


- Born: 1943, Philippines
- Dr. Mari-Jo Ruiz is known locally and
internationally as an expert in graph theory and
operations research, and her expertise is valued
not only in the academic but in different
industries and sectors as well.

10. Gregory Ligot Tangonan


- Born: 1947, Philippines
- He was known for his research in the field of
communications technology
- Specialties: - Innovation and Technology
- Intellectual property strategies for innovators
- International engineering projects in smart
energy solutions and sustainable environment
and environmental monitoring.
- High Technology
- Competitiveness Analysis and Leap-frog Strategies for
developing countries.

There are other outstanding Filipino scientists who are


recognized here and abroad for their outstanding contributions
in science.
1. Caesar A. Saloma
- He is an internationally renowned physicist
- Dr. Caesar A. Saloma received the Galileo
Galilei Award from the Internationall
Commission for Optics in recognition of his
significant contributions in the field of optics that
were accomplished under comparatively
unfavorable conditions.

2. Edgardo Gomez
- He is a famous scientist in marine science
- Gomez led the world's first national-scale
assessment of damage to coral reefs, work
which led to him being conferred the title of
National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014.

3. William Padolina
- He is a chemistry and president of National
Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)-
Philippines
- His professional career is truly a rich
convergence of his roles as scientist, teacher,
researcher. administrator, and policy maker.

4. Angel Alcala
- Dr. Angel Alcala is a world-renowned Filipino
ecologist and biologist with more than 30
years of contributions to the field of
conservation biology.
- He was named a National
- Scientist of the Philippines in 2014 for his
research into Philippine amphibians and
reptiles, as well as the conservation of marine-
protected areas
There are other scientists in the Philippines who were not identified in the list.
Yet, the Philippines still need more scientists and engineers, and there is a
need to support scientific research in the country.

• The University of the Philippines-Los Baños is a science paradise for


agriculture, forestry, plant and animal science, and veterinary science. It has
produced numerous scientist and various research in the fields mentioned.
University of the Philippines- Visayas is also a national center for marine
science, fisheries, and other related sciences. University of the Philippines-
Manila is a center of excellence and has produced many researchers,
doctors, health professionals, and scientists in the area of medical and public
health. University of the Philippines-Diliman also has established a national
science and engineering complex to develop more research and produce
more scientists and engineers in the country.
