1. SCOPE
The materials defined by this specification are alternative national steel specifications related to the
International Organization for Standardization classification.
2. APPLICATION
This specification was released originally to simplify material choice for fasteners which could be
sourced in several countries.
Complete compositional agreement may not exist between the alternates listed but these differences
are slight and will not significantly affect manufacture or application.
3. REQUIREMENTS
The general quality of manufacture of steel and the wire product for the making of fasteners shall
conform to the relevant ISO standard or the equivalent national standard for the country of sourcing.
In the absence of a national standard or for referee purposes, the ISO standard applies.
Specific requirements for composition, hardenability, mechanical properties and treatment condition
shall conform to the relevant national standards specified in section 3 of this specification.
This specification does not use approved sources. Any reliable supplier meeting these
requirements may be used.

5. SUMMARY OF REVISIONS
2013 05 08
• Added EN 10083 C55E to –B37 and adjusted C range to 0.48-0.65; S – changed to 0.05
max, Si added, P increased to 0.035 max
• P changed to 0.040 max on –B51
• Clarification added to the 2011 04 27 revision.
2011 04 27
• Removed ISO callouts in –B50 and B51 and updated nominal composition.
Clarification to above change: The ISO callout (high Si: 1.60-2.00 for –B50 and 1.80 to 2.20
for –B51) was removed as it was in conflict with the EN and the SAE (low Si: 0.10-0.30). The
composition was then adjusted to reflect the low Si range. Cr was changed from 0.20-0.40 to
0.15 max for –B51. Cr of 0.15 max was added to –B50. Ni at 0.20 max was added to both –
B50 and –B51.
2010 10 25
• N-STATUS WSD-M1A283-B9/B10,B12-B29,B31/B32,B34/B35,B56
• Updated suffixes to current industry standard callouts
• Added table for all suffixes
• Added nominal compositions to each suffix
• Added typical applications to each suffix
