CONTENT

I. Business ethics is a personal, individual affair

I disagree with the statement. Our daily life is primarily influenced by how society works
around us. For instance, people in Kuantan face enormous environmental and health
damage from the radioactive waste (Appendix 1) by Lynas company (Kader, The Toxic
Risks of Mining Rare Earths 2020). If anyone agrees, it's only because it hasn't happened to

7
them yet. So they can sit at home and watch TV comfortably, while others need to face a lot
of risk of disease and death.

II. Business and ethics do not mix

I disagree with the statement. Business is a human activity that can be evaluated from a
moral point of view. For example, Roger Ng (Appendix 2), the former head of Goldman
Sachs, has been found guilty of taking part in the 1MDB scandal with financing, laundering
and receiving significant amounts of money. This proves the destruction to society and our
nation if business and ethics do not mix (1MDB scandal: Ex-goldman Malaysia boss found
guilty 2022).

III. Business ethics is relative

I disagree with the statement. It is troublesome to have the belief that just because someone
or society thinks something is correct, it necessarily is right. It would be gambling if we
didn't have a universal business ethic. When someone with distorted or extremist values
becomes a senior executive or even a national leader, the people suffer because of him
alone. For instance, many of China's giant companies support the 996 work culture that is
considered labour exploitation in other countries (Duncan, China's 996 work culture is
labour exploitation by another name 2021).

IV. Good business means good ethics

I disagree with the statement. Businesses' primary goal is to make money, and good ethics
cannot help them solve the problem. Such as Lynas Company's net income has increased a
lot in their 2022 year's financial statements (Appendix 3), which can make them a good
business but does not represent a good ethic (Simply Wall St, Lynas Rare Earths full year
2022 earnings: Misses expectations 2022). According to (Lim, Lynas does not consider the

8
environment and health of Malaysians 2019); the company produced the waste without a
planned disposal method and location to properly dispose of the toxic material.

V. Information and computing are amoral

I disagree with the statement. Information and computing bring us many benefits, such as
the convenience of communication and exposure to information. But it also exposes us to
danger and exploits by people who want to take advantage of us, resulting in many
tragedies, such as personal data theft, fraud, kidnapping and other crimes. As an example
(Appendix 4), more than 500 million Facebook users' personal information was leaked by
the hacker (Holmes, 533 million facebook users' phone numbers and personal data have
been leaked online 2021).
