TELLEGEN'S' THEOREM
AIM

To verify the Tellegen’s Theorem.

THEORY

Tellegen’s theorem is valid for any lumped network which may be linear
or non-linear, passive or active, or time-varying or time-invarient. This theorem
states that in an arbitrary lumped network, the algebraic sum of the power in all
branches at any instant is zero. All branch currents and voltages in that network
must satisfy kirchhoff’s laws. Otherwise, in a given network, the algebraic sum
of the powers delivered by all sources in equal to the algebraic sum of the
powers absorbed by all elements. This theorem is based on Kirchhoff’s two
laws, but not on the type of circuit elements.

Consider two networks N1 and N2, having the same graph with different
types of elements between the corresponding nodes.

Then b
∑ V1KI2K = 0
K=1

and b
∑ V2KI1K = 0
K=1

To verify Tellegen’s theorem, consider the two circuits having same

graphs shown in fig ‘1’.

In Fig ‘1’ (a)

I1 = I2 = 2A; I3 = 2 A

And v1 = - 2V, v2 = - 8 V, v3 = 10V

And in Fig ‘1’ (b)

I11 = I12 = 4A; I13 = 4 A

And v11 = - 20V, v12 = 0 V, v13 = 20V

now 3
∑ vKi1K = v1i11 + v2i12 + v3i13
K=1

= (- 2)(4) + (- 8)(4) + (10)(4) = 0

and 3
∑ vKiK = v11i1 + v12i2 + v13i3
K=1

= (- 20)(2) + (0)(2) + (20)(2) = 0

Similarly 3
∑ vKiK = v1i1 + v2i2 + v3i3
K=1

= (- 2)(2) + (- 8)(2) + (10)(2) = 0

and 3
∑ v1Ki1K = (- 20)(4) + (0)(4) + (20)(4) = 0
K=1

This verify Tellengen’s theorem.

PROCEDURE

1. Short 1-3-11 (Node-A), 4-5-7 (Node-B), 8-9-12 (Node-C) & 2-6-10

(Node-D).
2. Now disconnect the connection between 2 to 6 (keep the connection 6
to 10 intact) and connect Vs +Ve terminal at (2) and Vs -Ve at (6).
3. Now this topology is to be kept same and measure different voltage
across different branches.
4. For measuring voltage across branch 1 i.e. V1 connect voltmeter +Ve
terminal to (2) and –Ve terminal at (3) and note down the reading for
V1 = +6.05 V (approx).
5. For V2 : Connect voltmeter =Ve terminal to (3) and –Ve terminal to
(4) and note down the reading for V2 = +3.04 V (approx).
6. For V3 : Connect voltmeter =Ve terminal to (5) and –Ve terminal to
(6) and note down the reading for V3 = +3.07 V (approx).
7. For V4 : Connect voltmeter =Ve terminal to (5) and –Ve terminal to
(8) and note down the reading for V4 = 0 V.
8. For V5 : Connect voltmeter =Ve terminal to (8) and –Ve terminal at
(10) and note down the reading for V5 = +3.05 V (approx).
9. For V6 : Connect voltmeter =Ve terminal to (3) and –Ve terminal at
(12) and note down the reading for V6 = +3.05 V (approx).

CURRENT MEASUREMENT

1. For measuring current across branch (1) i.e. I1

Connect loop (b)’s (1) terminal to + Ve of Ammeter and –Ve of Ammeter

to (1) terminal.

11
(a)
3 Milli Ammeter
(b) + –

I1 = - 61.8 mA (approx)
2. For measuring current across branch (2) i.e. I2

11
(a)
3 Milli Ammeter
(b) + –

I2 = 30.9 mA (approx)

3. For measuring current across branch (3) i.e. I3

4 7

Milli Ammeter
+ –
5

I3 = + 30.8 mA (approx)

4. For measuring current across branch (4) i.e. I4

4 7

Milli Ammeter
5 + –

I4 = 0 mA (approx)

5. For measuring current across branch (5) i.e. I5

12

8 Milli Ammeter
+ –
9

I5 = 30.8 mA (approx)

6. For measuring current across branch (6) i.e. I6

11

3 Milli Ammeter
+ –
1

I6 = 31.2 mA (approx)
Now verify the result with

å VI = 0

= V 1I1 + V2I2 + V3I3 + V4I4 + V5I5 + V 6I6

= (6.05 x –61.8) + (3.04 x 30.9) + (3.07 x 30.8) + (0 x 0) + (3.05 x 30.8)

+ (3.05 x 31.2)

= –373.89 + 93.936 + 94.556 + 0 + 93.94 + 95.16

= –373.89 + 377.592

= 3.702
(This is due to difference in tolerance of various components/instruments used).

NOTE
(i) Topology should be same while measuring voltage and current
in different branches.
(ii) Voltage source should be connect in series between nodes.
(iii) Current source should be connect in parallel between nodes.
