ESS2.E: Biogeology
Living things affect the physical characteristics of their regions (e.g. plants’ roots hold soil in
place, beaver shelters and human built dams alter the flow of water, plants’ respiration
affects the air) Many types of rocks and minerals are formed from the remains of organisms
or are altered by their activities.

Getting children familiar with Microsoft Sway is the lesson's learning objective. Students need
to be able to make their own fossil presentation (whether that be an E-book or slideshow) at
the conclusion of the class, which they may show me.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
First, I will teach students the curriculum required about fossils. Once they have a good
understanding of what fossils are, how they are created, and they are aware that a variety of
rocks and minerals are created from the remnants of living beings I will show them my Sway
presentation about fossils. This is how I will introduce them to Sway, and I will show them the
features of the program. All students will be provided with instructions for their project and
an informational rubric, so they know exactly what is required. This will make students aware
of their goals. Students will utilize Sway by creating an E-book or slideshow about the
information they have learned about. I will do halfway checkups with all my students to
ensure they understand how to use the software and are on the right path. At the project's
end, students will send me their projects and be able to present their hard work to their
fellow pupils.
Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

I will assign students a storyboard, a written plan created before using a computer, to keep
them actively involved in this project. To further their understanding of fossils and how they
formed, students will also engage in exploratory activities. Hopefully, this will remind
students of their learning objectives for the project's duration. These activities maintain
students' active attention on their learning objective and boost their academic performance.
Sway aims to make creating slide shows for presentations simple for everyone. Because of
this, third graders who have never presented anything before can use it. As a result, Sway is
focusing on the UDL framework's representation component, which facilitates the creation of
projects using an online interface for any kid or adult. This is how the software helps all kids
in the classroom learn and improves their experience. Sway helps all pupils since it makes it
simple for kids to create, which is the highest level of Bloom's Taxonomy.
I think third graders will benefit a great deal from this lesson. They are learning not only the
value of fossils and what they are, but also how to make their own presentations—a skill that
many of them have never had before. The ability to produce anything independently will
instill a powerful sense of confidence in my kids. I can't wait to watch how everyone uses
Sway and how the knowledge they are given is reflected in the result.
