TUTORIAL NO: 3
Conduction Heat Transfer (contd.)

1. Obtain an expression for the steady state temperature distribution of a two-dimensional

rectangular fin having constant thermal conductivity. The fin has a thickness L in the Y-
direction and is semi-infinite in the X-direction. The base temperature of the fin and the
ambient temperatures are to and t∞ respectively. Assume the heat transfer coefficient to be
large.

2. A copper slab ¿) measuring 400 mm * 400 mm * 5 mm has a uniform temperature of 250 ℃

. Its temperature is suddenly lowered to 30 ℃. Calculate the time required for the plate to
reach the temperature of 90 ℃ . Assume the convective heat transfer coefficient as
2
90 W /m ℃.
( Ans :123.75 s ¿

3. A 120 mm diameter apple ( ρ=990 kg /m , c=4170 J /kg ℃ , k=0.58W /m℃ ),
approximately spherical in shape is taken from a 25 ℃ environment and placed in a
refrigerator where the temperature is 6 ℃ and average convective heat transfer coefficient
over the apple surface is 12.8W /m2 ℃. Determine the temperature at the center of the apple
after a period of 2 hours. If Heisler chart is needed, use the attached chart.
( Ans :20.25 ℃ ¿
4. Derive the expression for heat flow for composite cylinder where the 3 layers of different
materials are present as the concentric cylinders. Assume the symbols at your own choice.

5. A voltage of 10 V is impressed on a stainless steel wire ¿, resistivity, ρ=70∗10−6 Ωcm ¿ of

3.2 mm diameter and 300 mm length. The outer surface temperature of the wire is
maintained at 93 ℃ . What is the temperature at the center of the wire?
( Ans .138.4 ℃)
6. Derive an expression for temperature distribution whenever an infinite wall is exposed to
same temperature on both sides and the wall is generating heat at uniform rate. Suppose the
steady state one dimensional heat transfer.

t−t w
7. Derive the temperature distribution in dimensionless form as: [ ] = [1 – ¿ ], where
t max −t w
the symbols have their usual meanings, for a spherical heat conduction at steady state one
dimensional with uniform heat generation.

8. A 6 mm thick stainless steel plate ( ρ=7800 kg/m3 , c=460 J /kg ℃ , k=55 W /m℃) is used
to form the nose section of missile. It is held initially at a uniform temperature of 30 ℃.
When the missile enters the denser layers of the atmosphere at a very high velocity, the
effective temperature of air surrounding the nose region attains the value 2150 ℃ ; the
surface convective heat transfer coefficient is estimated as 3395 W /m ℃. If the maximum
metal temperature is not to exceed 1100℃ , determine: a) Maximum permissible time in
these surroundings b) Inside surface temperature under these conditions. See the attached
charts if needed.
( Ans :2.58 s∧1100.6 ℃ )
