Polar bears in danger

Polar bears live around the Arctic Ocean, in Alaska, northern Canada and
Russia. They’re beautiful wild animals, and they’re the biggest land
predators on Earth. Sadly, they’re also endangered animals.
Seals are polar bears’ main food. Polar bears are endangered because it’s
becoming more difficult for them to catch the seals. The bears wait on the
frozen Arctic Ocean and catch the seals when they come up through holes
in the ice. They can only reach the seals when the sea is frozen, but the world’s weather is changing.
World temperatures are getting higher, and the sea ice in the Arctic is getting thinner. In summer, the bears
can’t walk over the ice, and so they can’t catch seals. Spring ice is also getting thinner, so it’s becoming
harder to catch seals in spring, too. A new report says that the amount of ice in the Arctic has become more
than 25% smaller in the past half-century. As a result, the bears are hungry. They have started to come into
towns to look for food. Some polar bears have even entered houses! People in Arctic towns must be very
careful because bears can attack and kill humans. In the small, isolated Canadian town of Churchill, parents
are now taking their children to school to give them protection from attacks by bears.
Polar bears are very big and very fierce, but they're also very beautiful creatures. Protecting the polar bears’
Arctic habitat is important for bears and people.

BOTTLED WATER – A DANGER TO THE

ENVIRONMENT
Do you drink bottled water? You may not realize that bottled water is bad for the
environment. This is the message on a website from Barham College, a school near
Birmingham.

John Knowles, who teaches at the school, explains. ‘Bottled water has to travel a long
way from the factories where it's produced to the shops where it's sold. Sometimes it
travels around the world. This uses a huge amount of petrol, and causes a lot of
pollution. Plastic bottles are also thrown away as rubbish. Bottled water is something
that we don’t need. We could help to protect the environment if we stopped buying
water in bottles.’

‘We’ve got a conservation group here at the school, and we try to help the
environment through our website,’ says Anna Benning, a student at Barham College.
‘Lots of students at the school are going to stop drinking bottled water. Bottled water
may not be healthier than basic tap water, and it’s much more expensive.’
However, bottled water is popular and many people won't want to stop drinking it. In 2004, the average
British person drank 33 litres of bottled water. In Italy, each person drank 200 litres. In total, the world drank
154 billion litres – an increase of 54 percent in just five years.

‘On our website we’re asking people not to buy these bottles of water,’ says Anna. ‘If lots of people made
this decision, they would help to protect the Earth from global warming.’

47. Students at Barham college are putting information …

A. on the Internet B. in shops and supermarkets.

A. more bottled water in Britain than in Italy. B. more tap water than before.

Questions 51 through 55 refer to the following text

Fourteen-year-old Neil Atkins talks about working on a house-building project in the United States.
I got involved in the house-building project through my Uncle Brian. We went to stay with him in the United
States for six weeks during the summer holiday. He was helping out on the project and asked me to come
along. At first I wasn’t interested. I was enjoying watching lots of new channels on TV! But after a while I
got bored and went along to see what he was doing. I realised that what he was doing was really great!

6|Page
He was helping out for an organisation that builds houses for people who can’t usually afford them. Instead,
the organisation buys all the wood and bricks and things you need to build a house. It lends the family the
tools and hires some guys who know what they’re doing. They also get people like my uncle, who aren’t
builders but who just want to help out in the community, to do the more simple building jobs. The family
eventually pays all the money back to the organisation, but they can do this over many years, and it’s much
cheaper than buying a new house.

I helped out with moving dirt and preparing tea. It was a bit disappointing that I wasn’t allowed to use the
tools and do jobs like cutting wood and nailing things together. I understand why they do it, but do design
and technology at school so I know I could do it right. Some people had no idea how to use a hammer
correctly! But if I go back next year, I’ll be able to do it, because I’ll be fifteen then.

A. He lent the family his tools. B. He is a qualified builder.

A. his uncle had such good building skills. B. some adults didn’t know how to use tools.
C. he wasn’t allowed to cut wood. D. houses are so expensive in the USA.
54. Neil will be able to use the tools next year because…
A. he is planning to study design and technology.
B. he will be old enough.
C. his uncle is going to teach him how to use them.
D. there will be fewer people on the Project
55. What might Neil write in his diary about his experience?
A. Building the house was okay, but it wasn’t as fun as watching American TV!
B. I learnt a lot of useful things for my design and technology course from working on the building
project.
C. I really enjoyed building the house. It gave me the chance to use my design and technology skills.
D. Building the house was better than watching TV, but I wanted to do more building work.
