Part 2: Questions 49 – 55: Read the text. Match the headings (A-H) with the paragraphs (49- 55). Th
ere is one heading that you do not need. (7pts)
A. Risky food E. An unhealthy custom
B. Convenient but unhealthy F. A weight-loss camp
C. A dangerous disease G. Weight problems in Britain
D. The secret of a balanced diet H. Unhealthy food
49. Weight problems among children in Britain are increasing. More and more children are over their
ideal weight. Obese children are often bullied at school and may have health problems on too much junk
food, computer games and TV. So the first Britain's camp for obese children has been opened. Each
morning at the camp, the children do three hours of activities like football, hockey and rugby. After lunch
they have lessons on nutrition and cooking. Most kids leave the camp feeling healthier and happier than
before.
50. Do you know a person who has never eaten fast food? Many restaurants sell what is called "fast" or
"junk" food – hamburgers, chips and so on. This food is tasty and cheap. Such food is very popular,
especially with children and teenagers. What is more, fast food saves much time and effort for busy
working people. People don't have to go to a supermarket, prepare meals and wash the dishes when they
eat out. However, many experts say that fast food is not healthy.
51. In North America and Europe people think that a slim woman is healthy and careful about what she
eats. But in many parts of Africa a fat woman is considered beautiful. In central Africa the girls are sent to
fattening rooms where these girls sit, lie and eat. They are given bowels of food that help them get fat. It is
boring to stay in these rooms for so long with nothing to do, but the girls do not mind. A future husband
wants his wife to be fat so other people will think that the man is rich and he is a responsible man.
52. Experts say that fast food makes people overweight and even obese and elevates the risk of diabetes
and cancer. If your food includes hamburgers, chips, hot dogs, pizzas and fizzy drinks like Coke, Pepsi,
Sprite and others, you are facing a serious problem threatening your health. Such food is full of chemical
additives. For example, a can of Coke contains about eight teaspoons of sugar and artificial sweeteners.
Moreover, there is a risk of food poisoning.
53. Food poisoning is a common, distressing and sometimes life-threatening problem for millions of
people throughout the world. Food poisoning is when someone gets sick from eating food or drink that has
gone bad or is contaminated by bacteria. Depending on the type of infection, people can even die as a
result of food poisoning. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 16 million
people in Britain become ill from the food they eat, and about 1,000 of them die every year.
54. People today are probably more concerned about food than ever before. We worry about eating foods
that contain too much fat and so we cut down on things like meat, bread, potatoes and dairy products. The
problem is that we may also be cutting out good sources of iron or other vitamins and minerals. Suddenly
we start feeling tired and irritable – Eating well does not mean that you should cut out all your favourite
foods; it just means eating sensibly and trying to avoid too much fast food.
55. Genetically modified crops have been developed by changing the plant's genetic structure in order to
help the plant resist against different diseases or produce larger harvest. However, there is no scientific
conclusion so far to prove the safety of GM foods for humans. We don't know what unforeseen
consequences there might be. Most people prefer not to risk their health because scientists are not sure if
GM food is absolutely harmless or not.

Part 3: Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question. Write your answer in the
numbered box. (10 pts)
Reading 1: (from question 56-60)
How does an employee fill those spare minutes they occasionally have when at work? Whatever they do,
they may be surprised to find that they are not the only one who knows about it. Even worse, they could
lose their job because of it.
A report by the American Management Association discovered that forty per cent of companies in the US
keep a check on their employees by installing infrared detectors to covertly monitor staff movements.
Checking e-mail, voice mail, telephone conversations and computer keystrokes, even using hidden
cameras to monitor staff during the day, is also common practice. Most banks already record telephone
conversations for security reasons, but the information they gather can also be used for more sinister
purposes. In many cases, the information gathered is not considered confidential, and details are routinely
passed to credit agencies and government departments. It is understandable that employers want to prevent
such things as theft and legal liability for employees' actions, but how far should this type of surveillance
go?
It is already illegal in Germany for companies to watch and listen in on their staff, but in most countries
there are no privacy laws protecting citizens while they are at work. One per cent of American companies
already carry out genetic testing of employees – a figure that will definitely rise as costs fall – and routine
drug testing is becoming common practice in offices all over the western world.
Some American states are starting to introduce their own rules, outlawing drug tests, polygraph lie
detection and preventing individuals from having their e-mails and telephone conversations checked. Yet
these are only the first actions to be taken against Big Brother's influence in the office, and there will be no
definitive laws or solutions in the foreseeable future.

56. According to the passage, what can banks do with the recorded telephone conversations?
A. Keep the information confidential.
B. Give the information to third parties.
C. Pass it on to their security department.
D. Check their employees' credit rating.
57. What does the text state about privacy laws in most countries?
A. Employees do not have to take polygraph tests.
B. There is no legislation protecting employees.
C. It is illegal for employers to watch their staff.
D. Genetic testing will soon increase.
58. As used in the second paragraph, 'covertly' is closest in meaning to _____.
A. silently B. openly C. secretly D. readily
59. It can be inferred from the passage that when an employee has spare time, he/she is _____.
A. doing something their employer would disapprove of
B. not working hard enough and it annoys their employer
C. constantly being monitored by hidden cameras
D. having their private telephone conversations recorded
60. Which of these titles best summarizes the text?
A. New Surveillance Laws
B. Big Brother Is Disappearing
C. Illegal to Monitor Staff
D. No Hiding Place in the Office

Reading 2: (from question 61-65)
Graphology is the analysis of handwriting. Personality and character traits can be deduced from the
handwriting on the page, and it can be the final arbiter as to whether you get a particular job or not.
Graphology was integrated into psychological thought by Max Pulver in Switzerland, who was interested
in the symbolic meanings of the space that handwriting takes on the page. His work has formed the basis
of modern graphology and its interpretation of the character of the writer.
Through study, certain characteristics of the writing can be attributed to certain personality traits. Specific
elements of a sample of 'normal' handwriting are studied. The normality of this handwriting is difficult, if
not impossible to guarantee: if somebody is excited they may write faster and larger than normal. If they
are intimidated by knowing they are being tested, they may write too slowly in an effort to be neat.
There are some elements of writing which are unlikely to be related to mood or situation. For example,
most people are taught to write cursively – connected or joined-up writing and variations from this can be
a good indicator of basic character and temperament. Connected writing is analogous to a chain, and
basically indicates smooth, logical and linked thoughts. If it is exaggerated, though, it may be interpreted
as laziness and readiness to fall into routine. Disconnected writing shows jumpy, intuitive thinking, which
can be both good and bad, indicating at the same time a fertile imagination and someone who is easily
distracted.
Although graphology is used to examine suitability for some jobs, handwriting may make an important
overall impression. A handwritten application form may be the first contact that a potential employer has
with someone. Many recruiters make an unconscious judgment on the way people write, and assess their
suitability for a job immediately on the basis of it.
61. What can a graphologist infer after analyzing a person's handwriting?
A. what sort of person they are B. if their handwriting is like their character
C. how fast they can write D. whether they could be a graphologist
62. According to the passage, connected writing _____.
A. is a sign of being temperamental B. indicates a tendency to exaggerate
C. is evidence of rational thinking D. shows someone can be distracted
63. As used in the first paragraph, 'arbiter' is closest in meaning to _____.
A. decision B. influence C. choice D. authority
64. What does the passage state about the effect of handwritten application forms on some recruiters?
A. They are not conscious of the writing.
B. They can tell what sort of person has completed it.
C. They use graphology to determine an applicant's suitability.
D. They make an initial decision based on the handwriting.
65. What can influence the speed at which a person writes?
A. Their emotional state. B. How big their handwriting is.
C. If their writing is connected or disconnected. D. Whether they have intuitive thinking.
