Bilirubin
Bilirubin
Bilirubin
Reference Value:
Conjugated bilirubin: 0-0.2 mg/dl (0-3umol/L)
Unconjugated bilirubin: 0.2-0.8 mg/dl (3-14umol/L)
Total bilirubin: 0.2-1.0mg/dl (3-17umol/L)
Delta Bilirubin
• It is a conjugated bilirubin tightly bound to albumin.
• It has longer half life than other forms of bilirubin.
• It is dormed due to prolonged elevation of conjugated
bilirubin in biliary obstruction.
• It helps monitoring decline of serum bilirubin following
surgical removal of gallstones.
• It reacts with diazo reagent in direct bilirubin assay
• It is not calculated in neonatal patients (less than or
equal 14 days)
• Reference Value: <0.2 mg/dl (<3umol/L)
• Formula:
• TB - DB + IB = Delta Bilirubin
JAUNDICE
• Icterus or hyperbilirubinemia
• Yellow discoloration of skin, sclerae, and
mucus membranes
• Clinically evident when bilirubin level exceeds
2 mg/dl
Classification of Jaundice
METHODS
• Serum specimens should be free from
hemolysis and lipemia.
• Serum should be measured in the dark and
measured ASAP or within 2-3hours of
collection.
• If serum or plasma is separated from the cells
and stored in the dark, it is stable for 2 days at
room temperature, 1 week at 4°C, and
indefinitely at -20°C.
