ABSTRACT

This study is aimed to raise awareness of human cruelty and unfair

treatment towards the animals who are unable to defend themselves. With the use

of social media, we will raise awareness of animal abuse, educate others on how

to prevent it from happening in the future, and fight for the rights of mistreated

animals. We’ll demonstrate the effects of animal abuse in this study, along with

ways you can prevent other animals from suffering in the same way.

INTRODUCTION

In recent decades, the ethical treatment of animals has emerged as a

paramount concern in the collective consciousness of societies worldwide. The
evolving understanding of animals as sentient beings, capable of experiencing
pain, joy, and complex emotions, has ignited a paradigm shift in attitudes towards
the exploitation and cruelty that persist in various domains. From the confines of
factory farms to the laboratories conducting cosmetic and medical testing, the
pervasive issue of animal cruelty demands comprehensive examination and
ethical reform.

In the Philippines, animal welfare legislation is made up of the Animal

Welfare Act (1998), the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (2001)
and a large number of supporting Administrative Orders regulating many
processes and facilities that affect animal lives, such as farm animal transport and
pet shops. Although sentience is not formally recognized in legislation, there is
legal recognition that a large number of animals, both vertebrates and
invertebrates, can suffer both physically and mentally, and the Five Freedoms are
also enshrined in law. Similarly, guidelines on chicken and pig rearing, transport
and slaughter were written to align with OIE standards. Much of the legislation
goes beyond considerations of animal health from human health and productivity
perspectives signifying that animal welfare is important in the Philippines.

While there are many aspects to Philippine law that have a positive effect
on animal welfare, this is not equal across all animal species. The Wildlife
Resources Conservation and Protection Act provides anti-cruelty provisions for
wild animals but also allows many species to be hunted even when listed under
CITES conservation status as ‘threatened’. The commercial breeding of wild
animals is also allowed in legislation. Similarly, there is a lack of legislation banning
inherently cruel and unnecessary practices such as fur farming, long-distance
transport of live animals and testing on animals for cosmetics, including on wild
caught animals. While zoos are somewhat regulated and require licenses, there
are no further Administrative Orders governing best practice and guidelines for
animal welfare. Under Philippine law there are also inconsistencies. Dog and horse
fighting are banned outright in the Animal Welfare Act (1998), whereas cockfighting
is not.

Advocacy | (Animal Cruelty-Free)

This study is positioned at the nexus of this pressing concern, delving into
the multifaceted dimensions of animal cruelty and advocating for cruelty-free
practices. The aim is not merely to elucidate the extent of the problem but to
underscore the critical importance of adopting humane alternatives across diverse
industries. In doing so, the research aspires to make meaningful contributions not
only to the welfare of animals but also to the broader societal fabric by promoting
ethical, sustainable, and compassionate practices. The significance of this study
lies in its potential to catalyze positive change on multiple fronts. By
comprehensively understanding the ramifications of animal cruelty and actively
advocating for cruelty-free alternatives, we hope to influence policy-makers,
industries, and consumers alike. Our research endeavors to be a cornerstone in
the edifice of a global movement towards responsible and humane practices,
aligning societal values with the well-being of all living beings.

Furthermore, this research seeks to extend its impact beyond the immediate
sphere of animal welfare. It envisions itself as a catalyst for systemic change,
prompting a collective reevaluation of humanity's relationship with animals and the
planet. By comprehensively understanding the consequences of animal cruelty,
this research seeks to empower individuals and organizations, providing them with
the knowledge necessary to make informed, ethical choices. The dissemination of
knowledge on cruelty-free alternatives aims to inspire a profound paradigm shift in
consumer behavior and corporate practices, fostering a world where ethical
considerations are integral to decision-making processes.

As we embark on this exploration, it becomes evident that the journey

towards animal cruelty-free practices is not only a moral imperative but also a
pathway to fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and the diverse
array of species that share our planet. By addressing the root causes and
consequences of animal cruelty, this research aims to be a catalyst for change,
inspiring a global shift towards a more humane, compassionate, and sustainable
future—one in which the ethical treatment of animals is not just an aspiration but
a universal norm.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

In an up-to-date survey of Dr. Dizon-Flores's recent research, animals are

utilized in experiments and investigations owing to the similarities in their
physiologies and anatomies to those of humans. This contribution aids in the
comprehension and development of treatments for a broad spectrum of human
and animal diseases. Additionally, animal studies play a pivotal role in assessing
the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, medicines, consumer products, and
various other substances.

Numerous animals worldwide endure suffering and fatalities due to acts of

animal cruelty. Researchers examine prisoner behavior through documentaries or
self-reports to establish a connection between animal cruelty and aggression or
antisocial conduct (Quinet, 2014). Flynn (2000) contends that any form of harm or
abuse to these animals can indicate a cognitive behavioral disorder. Gullone
(2012), in her book, rationalizes animal cruelty behavior by applying existing
theories related to aggression and antisocial conduct.

The Philippines enacted the Animal Welfare Act (R.A. 8485) in 1998. This
legislation, overseen by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), involves a Committee
on Animal Welfare comprising representatives from various government agencies
to review rules and regulations. These guidelines cover the establishment and
registration of animal facilities, including veterinary hospitals, animal clinics, pet
shops, and zoos, ensuring their cleanliness and safety. The law also outlines
restrictions on killing animals for research and transportation regulations for
animals handled by dealers.

Recognizing that animals have rights and deserve humane treatment, this
paper highlights two key considerations. First, as some research suggests a link
between animal cruelty and psychological conflicts such as aggression, antisocial
behavior (Gullone, 2012), and cognitive behavioral disorder (Flynn, 2000), the
enactment and enforcement of this law could positively impact both humans and
animals. This protection aims to shield animals from torture, abuse, neglect, and
harm, fostering improved cognitive behavior and psychological well-being in
humans. It is crucial to acknowledge that while this law is significant, it is not
without imperfections.

Goals and Objectives

The advocacy is aimed to address the pervasive issue of animal cruelty by

implementing a comprehensive strategy encompassing awareness, legislative

changes, corporate responsibility, and ethical consumerism. Around 130 billion

animals are slaughtered annually for food, often in filthy factory farms. Both

humans and animals have rights, and they should be treated respectfully, avoiding

harm or experimentation.

Advocacy | (Animal Cruelty-Free)

Specifically, it aimed to;

1. To initiate a far-reaching awareness campaign, leveraging social

media, events, and educational programs to disseminate information

about animal cruelty. This multifaceted effort aims to engage a broad

audience, with collaborations planned with influencers, celebrities,

and organizations to amplify our message and reach a minimum of

1 million people. Concurrently, within the next six months, we will

embark on a research endeavor, delving into existing animal cruelty

laws to meticulously identify gaps and weaknesses. Subsequently,

over the following nine months, our focus will shift towards engaging

with legislators, presenting a comprehensive proposal aimed at

strengthening animal cruelty laws. This integrated approach aligns

our efforts, ensuring a strategic and impactful initiative to combat

animal cruelty.

2. To make a transformative impact within the next eight months, our

advocacy initiative will diligently identify and approach a minimum of

10 major corporations operating within the beauty, fashion, and

pharmaceutical industries. The objective is to initiate discussions and

encourage these corporations to adopt cruelty-free policies, thereby

contributing to a more ethical and compassionate business

approach. Following this, our focus will shift towards establishing

meaningful partnerships with at least five of these corporations within

the subsequent 12 months. This collaborative effort aims to actively

promote cruelty-free practices and products, fostering a positive shift

in industry practices.

Advocacy | (Animal Cruelty-Free)

Scope and Limitations

This topic focused on the critical transition to animal cruelty-free practices

across industries and sectors. It emphasizes the importance of using ethical,

humane alternatives to traditional methods that harm animals in the name of

research, production, and testing.

The Advocacy included the strategic exploration, promotion, and implementation

of policies and practices that advance animal welfare. It included activities like

raising public awareness, influencing legislative frameworks, and encouraging

businesses to use cruelty-free production and testing methods. Furthermore, the

advocacy sought to foster a cultural shift toward compassionate consumer

choices, encouraging the use of cruelty-free products and discouraging animal-

harming practices.

The respondents covered only pet owners, capturing insights from

individuals who have direct experience and involvement in pet care. While the focus

on pet owners provides specific and relevant insights, it's important to

acknowledge that the broader spectrum of stakeholders, such as non-pet owners,

policymakers, and animal rights advocates, may contribute additional perspectives

that enrich the understanding of the advocacy's impact and effectiveness.

Advocacy | (Animal Cruelty-Free)

Procedure

Firstly, each member of our group shared their ideas regarding the

advocacy we planned to pursue. Subsequently, as a collective, we voted to

determine which advocacy we would focus on. Following this decision, we

commenced gathering relevant information and data related to our chosen

advocacy. We then established a Facebook page, utilizing it as our primary

platform for promoting our cause. As a team, we collaborated to bolster the visibility

of our page by inviting friends and acquaintances to engage with our content. We

shared various materials, including posters, infographics, and videos, to articulate

the objectives of our advocacy. Utilizing applications such as CapCut and Canva

proved instrumental in enhancing the quality of our visual content.

EVALUATION

In this study we conducted, we intend to increase public awareness of

animal cruelty, as well as to disseminate information on the inequitable treatment

of harmed victim animals. We also want to reduce the number of animal cruelty in

the country and protect animals from getting abuse in the future. We made a

Facebook page so that we could speak to more people and be heard more clearly

in order to stop similar actions from happening in the future. We created a

Facebook page to spread the word about the inexcusable cruelty and unforgivable

actions that some people inflict on animals. In order for us to succeed, we will teach

others how to protect animals or stop animal mistreatment when they come across

it. We will also seek support from others because the more voice is included, the

louder our voices is going to be. We will exert every effort to reduce the number of

animal abuse cases and to protect these pitiful animals that are unable to defend

themselves, stand up or even speak for their rights.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

The study concerning animal experiments was carried out on STEM

students at Emilio Aguinaldo College. The majority of the survey’s questions ask

respondents if they whether support or oppose animal testing. The First Question

is “Most of the animal testing are for developing new medicines. Do you think that

animal testing should be allowed?” and out of 38 respondents, 76.3% answered

no while 23.7% answered yes. The Second Question is "Some foods are the

results of Animal Testing. Do you think that it should be appreciated or not?” and

out of 38 respondents, 55.3% answered yes while 44.7% answered no. The Third

Question is “Do you think that foods made from animals should not be allowed and

we all just should be a vegetarian?” and out of 38 respondents, 55.3% answered

yes while 44.7% answered no. This was conducted in the second semester of the

school year 2022-2023 of the EAC Campus. The survey of the study involves

knowing the approval of the respondents about the animal testing and the

questions aims to ascertain the respondents’ approval level about animal testing

although its use in the production of food, medicine, and other products. The

majority of respondents or 76.3% of the respondents are against animal testing,

and it’s possible that this is because they may have empathy for animals. The

survey was conducted to the Emilio Aguinaldo College Campus consisting of 38

Students from STEM Strand in any age.

Conclusions

As a result, we should put an end to animal mistreatment since, as the study

concluded, the majority of STEM Strand students, regardless of age, are against

animal testing. After all, animals are living beings with feelings of pain and suffering

16
Advocacy | (Animal Cruelty-Free)

just like humans. As long as not all animal experiments are stopped, FurFree

Harmony will keep fighting with their power and will continue standing out for

animals and acting as their voice.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, several suggestions were

made.

1) You can save an animal with just your voice and we can prevent it by just

spreading words. Be the voice of the animals because animals are living

beings too who deserved to live with humans happily and peacefully

2) Have a knowledge about the animals rights because you can use it in the

future and you can teach it to your children in order to protect the poor

animals.

3) We recommend you help stray dogs you come across on the streets by

giving them food or even bringing them into your house so they can have

the joyful family life they deserve.

4) You can also Inform anyone in your vicinity about the problem. Make people

aware that they have the power to step in when animals are being

mistreated or even tortured.

5) One of the ways in preventing animal testing too is avoiding purchasing

goods that involve animal testing, therefore the companies will create

product in a more humane way, and it’ll end animal abuse and avoid animal

cruelty.

6) Supporting the local animal rescues and charities is a terrific approach to

help put an end to animal abuse. If you are able to donate, you can donate.

If not, you can also think about volunteering.
