 The last dhatu formed and nourished from Ahar-rasa is a SHUKRA DHATU.

ETYMOLOGY (VYUTPATTI) SHUKRA DHATU

The word ‘Shukra’ is derived from the root ‘Shuch’.

Meaning of ‘shuch’ is pure.

Dhatu which exists in the body in its purest form, is called as ‘SHUKRA DHATU’.

SYNONYMS

Shukla, Akshaya, Nirmal, Majja-samudbhava, Ananda- prabhav, Kittavarjita, Pumsatva

are the synonyms for Shukra dhatu.

Virya, Dharusara, Retas, Paurusham, Teja, Bija are also the synonyms of Shukra dhatu.

Shukradhara kala is present in entire body.

As milk contains ghee, sugar cane contains juice, but ghee in milk, juice in sugar cane
is invisible, in the same way shukra dhatu present in the body.

Formation, transportation, ejaculation of shukra dhatu takes place in shukra vaha

Roots of shukra vaha srotas are testes & penis.

Sharngadhara have described it as Shukrashaya (testes).

According to Sushruta Samhita breasts and testes are roots of shukra vaha srotas.

PATH OF EXCRETION OF SHUKRA DHATU

Due to sexual urge, shukra dhatu formed in testes is carried to the lower part of basti
(bldder) and poured in urethra of a man and ejaculated out from the penis.

Jala (Ap) mahabhuta is predominantly present in shukra dhatu.

Shukra dhatu has Ashrayashrayi Sambandh with kapha dosha, hence shukra dhatu
is a saumya (cool) dhatu.

Shukra dhatu in female has been described in Bhava prakash.

According to Bhava Prakash, function of shukra dhatu is to keep vagina moist during
tha act of coitus.

In female Artavan is responsible for reproduction.

METABOLISM

Shukra is the last dhatu which is formed after majja dhatu.

According to Khale – kapota nyaya milk is instant aphrodisiac substance.

Poshak shukra is brought to shukravaha srotas and due to action of dhatwagni of
shukra dhatu, poshya shukra dhatu is formed.

According to Charak, Shukra dhatu is devoid of updhatu and mala, hence no mala is
formed from shukra dhatu.

Shukra dhatu is formed on 30th day from ahara rasa.

Though dhatu formation is a continuous process, according to Parashar shukra dhatu

is formed on the 8th day.

QUALITIES / PROPERTIES

Smell of Shukra dhatu is like honey.

Colour of freshly voided shukra dhatu looks crystalline white.

Colour of shukra dhatu after its liquification (after 10 to 20 minutes)

becomes liquid and looks like oil or honey (taila or kshaudra).

Colour of freshly voided shukra dhatu is white, later after 10 to 20 minutes, it

liquefies and becomes transparent.

Vitiated shukra dhatu may become red, yellow or blue.

Consistency of freshly voided shukra dhatu is liquid (drava).

Shukra dhatu is unctuous, slimy, viscus.

Because of these properties, shukra dhatu can traverse easily across

vagina and unite with ovum.

Heaviness of shukra dhatu is essential for its ejaculation.

Due to heaviness and liquidity, shukra dhatu can flow in downward direction.

Shukra dhatu is Avidahi means shukra dhatu does not produce any burning symptoms
when it comes in contact with vaginal epithelium.

Taste of Shukra dhatu is madhura (sweet).

Follwing properties of shukra dhatu are mentioned by Charak in Chikitsa-sthana –

 Freshly voided shukra is viscus, sweet, unctuous, white, slimy, quantity of freshly
voided shukra should be adequate, and shukra having all these properties is definitely
fertile.

Qualities of shukra dhatu are important to carry out its function of reproduction.

When shukra dhatu unites with stree beeja (ovum / artava), fertilization takes place.

If shukra dhatu is not properly developed, man would not be able to get aroused
and enjoy sexual pleasure.

बीजाथ :-
Function of healthy shukra dhatu is Reproduction (beejartha).
Dhairya, Priti, Harsha are the functions of shukra dhatu which exhibits at mental level.

PROPER AGE FOR SEX INDULGENCE

In Ayruveda, Sexual indulgence (sexual enjoyment) in prohibited before the age of 16

years and the age of 70 years.

Brfore the age of 16 years,reproductive system is not fully developed and body as well
as mind are in the state of growth hence sexual enjoyment is prohibited under the age
of 16 years.

In old age due to weakend body tissues, sexual induglance is prohibited after the age
of 70 years.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SHUKRASARA PURUSHA

Personality of best shukrasara person is very soft and attractive.

Eyes of such person are very attractive and seem to be filled with milk.

The uttam shukrasara person has good sexual stamina.

Voice of shukrasara person is very soft and sweet.

Complexion of shukrasara person is fresh and unctuous,ski is very radiant.

Shukarasara person has broad pelvis.

They have rounded, compact, smooth edged, white straight, strong theeth.

Shukrasara persons are popular in women.

They have good physical strength.

Shukrasara persons are endowed with happiness, health, wealth, children, honour.

While describing symptoms of shukra sarata, Sushruta has emphasized on characters

of theeth, bones and nails.

However while exminung symptoms of shukra sarata, one should look for person’s
theeth, nail and eyes. Along with this, devlopmen of secondary sex characters must be
examined.

UPADHATU

1. Acording to Cakra Samhita, Shukra dhatu is the purest dhatu, Hence it has no
upadhatus.
2. According to Sharangadhar Samhita ojas is the upadhatu of shukra dhatu.

Shukra dhatu is a pure dhatu.

Sushruta has compares shukra dhatu with pure gold.

Gold, When thousands time heated and purified, casts off no residue, that way shukra
dhatu is processed by agni and hence it does not have any waste product.

According to Ashtanga Hridaya, Ojas is the mala (waste product) of shukra dhatu.

MANIFESTATIONS OF SHUKRA-VRIDDHI

Excess libido, seminal calculi are the symptoms of shukra vriddhi.

Seminal calculi is a rare condition and it is surgically curable. Causes of seminal

calculi are still unknown and painful ejaculation, haemospermia, intertility are
the symptoms of semial calculi.

CAUSES OF SHUKRA-KSHAYA

(DECEASED SHUKRA DHATU)

Causes of Shukra-Kshaya described by Charaka are very much applicable to people

having modern lifestyle.

 Old age, stress, excess physical exercise, disease, Fasting, an excess indulgence of
sex are the common causes of shukra-kshaya.

In today’s era, intellectual stress, excess physical work and wrong dietary habits,
excess fasting are the common causes of shukra-kshaya.

These causes are predisposing factors for infertility as well as impotency.

Systemic disorders, hypertension, diabetes mellitus are also affecting young

generation.

Young people taking antihypertensive medicines may suffer from impotency as

impotency is the side effect of some antihypertensive medicines.

MANIFESTATIONS OF SHUKRA-KSHAYA

Delay in ejaculation, ejaculation accompanied with bleeding, severe pain in testicles,

burning sensation in uretha are the symptoms of decrease in shukra dhatu.

Pain in penis, testes, impotency, early or late ejaculation of semen or ejaculation of

semen with blood are the symptoms of decrease in shukra dhatu.

Weakness, dryness of mouth, pallor, vertigo, impotency, delayed ejaculation are the
symptoms of decreased in shukra dhatu.

Heavy, unctuous sweet food promotes formation of shukra dhatu.

Milk instantly produces shukra dhatu.

Milk, ghee, eggs, white gram are few shukra promoting food items while

Ashwagandha, musk, saffron are some shukra promoting dravyas.

SYMPTOMS OF DUSHITA SHUKRA

Klaibya means falure of erection of penis, Aharshana are the symptoms of Dushita
shukra.

Due to dushita shukra, person may become infertile.

If ovum of woman gets fertilized by dushit shukra, then garbha of dushit shukra gets
aborted. If not aborted, and baby born due to dushit shukra will be short lived and such
baby is alpayu or baby due to dushit shukra suffers from congenital anomalies.
