1. Describe how you have met each of the PSW Domains of Practice during this
practicum and provide two examples of each:
a) Ensures client safety while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment consistently
During my internship, I gained a deep understanding of the importance of maintaining a safe and
comfortable environment for clients through hands-on experiences. We thoroughly reviewed
safety protocols and procedures, learned about the proper use of equipment, practiced effective
handwashing techniques, utilized gloves, implemented infection control measures, and
developed skills in identifying potential hazards. The combination of theoretical knowledge and
practical training enabled me to grasp the significance of ensuring a safe environment for
clients.
b) Communicates effectively and appropriately using oral, written, and verbal methods
In our PSW program, we engaged in role-play exercises that simulated various communication
scenarios, providing us with a hands-on and immersive learning experience. These exercises
focused on using clear and empathetic language when interacting with clients, their families, and
other healthcare professionals. Through these activities, we honored our communication skills
and recognized the importance of employing appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication
techniques. Additionally, through assignments such as progress notes and care plans, I enhanced
my ability to accurately and concisely document essential information, ensuring comprehensive
and professional communication. Valuable feedback from instructors further facilitated the
improvement of my written communication skills in the context of the PSW role.
Mastering the skill of making relevant observations is paramount in the role of a PSW, and I
acquired this expertise through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
In our PSW program, dedicated classes emphasized the importance of observation in delivering
quality care. We delved into topics such as assessing and documenting changes in clients'
conditions, encompassing physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects. Through engaging in case
studies and participating in discussions, we developed the ability to make pertinent observations
and identify potential signs of distress or improvement. During my clinical internships, I had the
invaluable opportunity to put these skills into practice under the guidance of experienced
mentors. By closely observing clients' vital signs, physical appearance, behavior, and response
to care interventions, I refined my observation skills. Recognizing the significance of accurately
documenting these observations for effective care planning further solidified the importance of
this domain.
Central to my PSW training was the emphasis on respecting clients' autonomy, preferences, and
cultural values, ensuring the provision of care that is consistently client-centered and client-
directed. Through interactive activities and thought-provoking case studies, I learned to
incorporate these principles into my approach to care. Direct interactions with clients during my
clinical placements allowed me to gain a deep understanding of their unique preferences, needs,
and goals. Actively listening and engaging in conversations enabled me to gain valuable insight
into their individualized service requirements. This firsthand experience reinforced the
importance of tailoring services to meet the specific needs and desires of each client, ultimately
ensuring a truly customer-centric approach to care.
I listened carefully to all of teacher Emily's comments and took notes to help me
achieve my goals and improve my skills as a PSW. One of the main focuses was to
improve my English proficiency and I am proud to say that with dedication and
attendance at English classes, I have made significant progress in the last two months.
Reflecting on the feedback, I identified specific points that I immediately put into action
during my new placement in the community. As a result, I feel my English has
improved substantially, leading to positive results in expressing my thoughts and
communicating more effectively.
I diligently applied all the valuable tips provided by Professor Emily and they were
instrumental in this new placement. Feeling more confident and secure in my care, I
appreciate the guidance that contributed to my professional growth. I understand the
importance of continuous learning and maintaining a growth mindset, which I am
committed to as I prepare to begin my work as a PSW. By adopting a continuous
improvement mindset, I am confident that I will be able to deliver great results and
provide the best possible care for those I will be serving.
Overall, I am grateful for the guidance and support I received during the HLTH3054
PSW Clinical Professional Practice and HLTH-3055 PSW Consolidation Professional
Professional Practice. The feedback has been a valuable asset in shaping my
development as a PSW, and I look forward to building on that foundation further as I
embark on my career. With renewed confidence in my language skills and a dedication
to continuous learning, I am ready to make a positive impact in the lives of those in
need of care and support.
3. Name four things that you have learned during HLTH-3056 Professional
Practice in a Community Setting.
a. Understand and respect diverse care preferences: In a community setting, you may
encounter individuals with different care preferences, including wealthier people who
may have specific preferences or expectations for their care. Learning to adapt your
approach to accommodate these preferences while maintaining the principles of DIPPS
(Independence, Preference, Privacy, Safety and Dignity) is essential to providing
person-centered care.
b. Promoting independence for individuals who live together: In a community setting,
you may find clients who live together but are independent. This situation requires a
unique approach to care where you support each individual's independence, ensuring
their safety and well-being. Recognizing and respecting their autonomy is crucial to
maintaining their sense of identity and dignity.
c. Applying DIPPS principles in caregiving: During the HLTH-3056 Professional
Practice in a Community Setting, you likely learned to integrate the DIPPS principles
(Independence, Preference, Privacy, Safety, and Dignity) into your daily practice. These
principles serve as a guide to providing compassionate and respectful care to clients in a
community setting.
d. Effective communication with clients and their families: Effective communication is
essential in a community setting where you can interact with clients, their families and
other healthcare professionals. Learning to communicate with empathy and respect
allows you to understand your customers' preferences and provide the best possible
service according to their needs.
4. You are now ready for graduation. Reflecting on your experiences in this
program, name TWO elements of the program that you feel has BEST prepared
you for employment as a PSW.
Reflecting on my experiences in this program, two elements that I feel best prepared me
for employment as a PSW are:
1. Practical Training: The program's emphasis on practical training was invaluable in
preparing me for employment as a PSW. Through clinical internships and simulated
scenarios, I had the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to
real-life care situations. Working closely with experienced mentors has allowed me to
learn essential skills, build confidence in my abilities, and understand the nuances of
providing care in various settings. This hands-on experience gave me the necessary
competence and readiness to handle the challenges and responsibilities of a PSW role.
2. Person-Centered Care Approach: The program's strong focus on person-centered care
has been transformative in shaping my approach to care delivery. I learned the
importance of tailoring care to meet each client's unique needs, preferences, and goals.
Understanding the DIPPS principles (Independence, Preference, Privacy, Security and
Dignity) reinforced the importance of respecting the client's autonomy and treating them
with dignity and empathy. By prioritizing the client's well-being and actively involving
the client in care decisions, I am confident that I can establish meaningful, trusting
relationships with clients and provide care that truly makes a positive impact on their
lives.
Overall, these two elements were instrumental in preparing me for employment as a
PSW. I look forward to embarking on my professional journey, equipped with the
knowledge, skills and values needed to deliver high-quality care and make a difference
in the lives of those I will be serving.
