Question 1: Compute the dispersion coefficient in three directions (longitudinal, transverse,

and vertical) of a conservative chemical (e.g., chloride) traveling to a point 25 meters from where
it enters the groundwater. For the aquifer, hydraulic conductivity is 3×10-5 m/s, hydraulic
gradient is 0.0020 m/m, and an effective porosity of 0.25. The molecular diffusion coefficient
(D*) for chloride is 1×10-9 m2/s.
Note: You can assume the dispersivity in other direction based on longitudinal direction.

Question 2: A landfill is leaking an effluent with a concentration of Sodium of 1250 mg/L. It

seeps into an aquifer with a hydraulic conductivity of 9.8 m/day, a hydraulic gradient of 0.0040
m/m, and an effective porosity of 0.15. A downgradient monitoring well is located 25 m from the
landfill. What would the Sodium concentration be in this monitoring well 300 days after the
leak begins? The molecular diffusion coefficient (D*) for Sodium is 1.5×10-9 m2/s.
Note: Need to solve using the erfc(-x), is provided at the end of this HW.

Problem 3: If a salt solution were injected into the up-gradient constant head chamber in the
“ant farm” model shown in the figure below. What concentration would we expect to see if a
water sample were taken from the second set of piezometers after 3.0 minutes? The soil in
the model has a hydraulic conductivity of 200 m/day. The concentration of the salt in the injected
solution is 2.0 gram/liter. Water flows through the model in response to a hydraulic gradient of
0.26 ft/ft. Assume that the effective porosity (ne) is 0.25, dynamic longitudinal dispersivity is
0.36 in, and molecular diffusion (D*) is 1.55×10-6 in2/sec.

Question 4: A capture well is pumping at a rate of 21 gpm from a confined aquifer with a
hydraulic conductivity of 28 ft/day, an initial hydraulic gradient of 0.0033 ft/ft, and a saturated
thickness of 31 ft.

(a) What is the maximum width of the capture zone?

(b) What is the capture zone width at the location of well?
(b) What is the distance from the well to the downgradient end of the capture zone along
the central line of the flow direction?
